Description

UNITED 'ST TEs PATENT OFFICE;
WM. H. sronn, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED LINING ,FOR PETROLEUM-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,58 1, dated May Q, 1865.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. STONE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lining Petroleum-Packages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,,
which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention consists in furnishing barrels or packages with a lining of pure wax produced by heating said barrels or packages to a 180 or 200, with'a quantity of wax in them, so that the wood will absorb a quantity. of wax and the surplus can be readily made to run off, leaving the inner pores of the wood saturated with the wax.
The leakage of barrels or packages generally used for carrying petroleum is a source of great loss, and it is occasioned particularly by the shrinkage of the wood, as the moisture originally contained in its pores evaporates. Furthermore, as soon as all or the greatest portion of the moisture has disappeared from the pores of the wood the petroleum passes clear through the wood, and a barrel of this kind occasions much trouble. In order torender the barrel safe against such loss, and absolutely oil-tight, it is necessary to expel the moisture from the pores of the wood and charge the same with some other material which is not liable to evaporate or disappear,
and which will effectually check the passage of petroleum through the wood. This P1113 pose is effected by my process. In heating a, l
the wood to 180 or 200 the moisture contained in the pores is expelled and the wood is prepared for the reception of the wax. The
wax, on being introduced into the heated balk rel or package, melts immediately, or it may i be previously melted, and on giving to the; a barrel or package a proper rolling and oscil-i lating motion the fluid wax is madeto flow over every portion of the inner surfaceof the same, and all the pores of thewood are filled with wax. l
This methodgof rendering barrels or other packages impervious to petroleum or other similar liquids is very simple, cheap, and effective, and barrels or packagesprepared according to my invention are capable to hold petroleum or other liquids for a verylong: time without leakage.
I claim as new and desire to secure Leta ters latent v a y y The within-described process of rendering barrels or other packages impervious to petroleum or other similar liquids by treating them i in the manner substantially as herein set forth,
