Description

N3D.' SEES, BANK PROTECTION AND RELATED DEVICES.
IMPROVEMENTv IN THE MANUFACTURE 0F FIRE-PROOT SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,937, dated January 9, 1866.
To all ulzom 'it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. FoWLER,
ofthe city of Brooklyn, county otKings, and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firelroot' Safes and I do hereby declare the following.,r to be a fi l, clear, and exact description of the sume,- l'et'ereuce being` had to the annexed drawing, making part ot' this specification, by which is shown a transverse section through asue made after the manner of my invention.
,The object ot' my improvement is to increase the power of the safe to protectl its contents both from tire and from dampness, and at the same time increase its durability by rendering it noncorrosi\'e. To accomplish lthis object I construct the shell ot' the safe in the ordinary ina-nner and after the ordinary style, and fill or pack it with hydraulic cement, instead of plas- Yter or other filling hitherto employed for that purpose. This cement I prepare b mixing it with hot water and then applying it in the same manner that plaster is now applied.
The advantage ot' mixing the cement with hot'J instead of cold water is that the hot water more thoroughly expands the cement, makes a given quantity ot' it; till a larger space than when mixed with cold water, makes it set more readily, and makes it more porous and a better non-conductor.
The advantage ot' cement over the plaster now generally employed for filling is that after it has set it does not absorb moisture and does not cori-ode theiron orsteelcomposingthe shell ot' the safe, and when subjected to fire does not grauulate, as is the case with'plaster, but; maintains itselt'iu a mass as formed by theinterior of the safe. J
Haring now described the nature of my improvement; and the manner of applying the same, l claim and desire to secure by Letters` Patent- '1. The new article of manufacture consisting` ot' a safe lled with hydraulic cement, as described, for the purpose speciiied.
2. Preparing the cement to till the safe, as aforesaid, by mixing it with hot water, as set forth. v
SAMUEL T. FOWLER.- Witnesses: AMos BROADNAX,
PETER D. KENNEY.
