IMPROVEMENT IN NON-CONDUCTING FILLINGS FOR THE WALLS 0F DINNER-PAIILS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,232, dated November 4, 1873; application filed July 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. SPILLER, of Cleveland, Ohio, have invented a Dinner-Pail, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make the walls of a dinner-pail impervious to the action of temperature by making said walls double and interposing between them a non-conductor of heat, whereby the contents may be kept hot for a long period of time, the said non-conductor consisting of lamp-black and a small quantity of hair or other suitable fibrous or porous material for packing. This renders the pail light in weight and is durable and economical.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body of the pail, which consists of two casings, between which is placed a filling of lamp-black, B, and, if deemed desirable, there may be mixed with it a suitable quantity of hair or woolen fiber. The other compartments of the pail are constructed in the usual manner, consisting of a bowl, 0, having a cover, D, on the top of which is attached a drinkingcup E.
15 experiments with this pail it was found to preserve the contents as hot as desirable after being placed in a refrigerator for six hours.
It is believed that this non-conductor would be equally useful as a filling for refrigerators, ice-pitchers, and also for iron safes, it being capable of resisting for a Very long time the effects of heat or cold.
Having described my invention, I claim-- A filling or packing for use in dinner-pails, 850., as a non-conductor of heat, composed of lamp-black with or without an admixture of hair or other fibrous material, substantially as described.
