FUMIGATOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAH. |919,

W INVEN'ron CHARLES F. HOOD, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FUMIGATOR.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Application led May 1, 1919. Serial No. 293,902.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Hoon, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Fumigators, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a fumigator of simple and convenient construction and one which may be used safely.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical central sectional view of an embodiment of the invention.
In the practice of the invention there is provided a vessel having walls which divide it into two closed compartments adjacent to each other. Each of the two compartments contains one of two substances which when mixed with each other combine to form a disinfectant gas such as formic acid gas, and means are provided whereby the contents of the two compartments may be readily intermingled.
While various forms of vessels may be used, the two compartments are preferably formed, as illustrated in the drawing, by placing a container 1 within an outer and larger container 2. The outer container is preferably provided with an opening 3 adapted to be closed by a suitable cap 4. The wall 6 of the inner container adjacent to the opening 3 is preferably formed of glass or other material which may be readily broken by striking it with a convenient article, such as a screw driver inserted through the opening 3 after the removal of the closure or cap 4. If desired the adjacently disposed walls of the two containers may be separated by a suitable packing 5.
The two compartments, thus or otherwise formed, are preferably filled, the inner with from the outer container and the glass wall 6 broken, as by means of a screw driver inserted through the opening 3. rllhe formaldehyde solution then flows into the compartment formed by the inner container l and mixes with the potassium permanganate which oxidizes the formaldehyle, generating formic acid gas. The reaction is exothermic, effecting a temperature rise of approximately 100O F. The heat thus produced volatilizes the essential oil of perfume which leaves in a room an agreeable odor for an extended period.
In using a fumigator constructed according to the invention, there is eliminated the usual danger of fire incident to the use of fumigators wherein formaldehyde is oxidized by heating it with a flame.
I claim as my invention:
A fumigator including in its structure two compartments separated` by a fragile partition wall, the said partition wall being accessible for disruption.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES F. HOOD. Witnesses:
Jos. D. Hoon,
C. A. STEGANIUS.
