Description

(No Model.)
0. LIEBB. FASTENING DEVICE.
No. 475,581. Patented May 24, 1892.
W/TNESSES. Y INVENTQR:
. A TTOHNE Y8.
UNITED STATES PATENT @rmon.
CHARLES LIEBE, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 475,581, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed March 26, 1892. Serial No. 426,563.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES LIEBE, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners, and is an improvement on the device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 470,246 were issued to me March 8, 1892.
The object of this invention is to make an exceedingly-strong and easily-adjusted fastener, which may be used to fasten the ends of two abutting pieces together, or which may be used to fasten any adjacent parts of furniture or other articles, and which will make a double connection between the two parts, so that in case one of the connecting portions is broken the other will hold the parts together.
To this end my invention consists in a fastener the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the fastener embodying my invention, showing its application to two separable pieces placed at right angles to each other. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a section on the lines 3 3 in Figs. 2 and 4, and Fig. 4 is a rear end View of the device.
The fastener is provided with a fiat bedplate 10, having screw-holes 10 to facilitate its attachment to an article, and this bedplate has one end formed into a flange 11, which flange is slotted longitudinally, as shown at 12 in Fig. 4, and a latch 13 is held to swing in the recess or slot 12. 13 extends longitudinally across the bed-plate, being pivoted at its rear end, as shown at 14, and the end of the latch which projects through the slot is formed into a head 15, which has a depending point 16, the inner inclined portion of the head serving to facilitate the fastening of the latch, as hereinafter described.
Above the latch 13 and near its free end is The latch (N0 model.)
pivoted a cam-lever 17, the lever being pivoted at one end, as shown at 18, and near the pivoted end of the lever is a cam 19, which is adapted to engage or strike the top surface of the latch 13 and force the latter downward to the limit of its movement, the cam being on the inner side of the lever, so that the lever may drop outside of the latch.
On the outer side of the flange 11 and near the top of the bed-plate is a'projecting tenon 20, which is enlarged near the middle and has an inwardly-inclined inner and upper portion 21, the inclination being opposite to the inclination of the inner side of the latch-head 15, and consequently when the latch-head and tenon are locked in position these oppo sitely-inclined parts will form What is practically a dovetail connection and prevent the loosening of the device. A face-plate 22 is arranged at one end of the bed-plate 10 and is adapted to be placed flatwise against the face of the flange 11, the face-plate having screw-holes 23 to facilitate its attachment to an article, and in the face-plate is a slot 24, which is adapted to receive the latch-head 15, and the lower wall of the slot is inclined inward, as shown at 25 in Fig. 3, so that the inclined inner side of the latch-head 15 may be forced down upon it, and the meeting inclined surfaces will have a tendency to draw the two parts 10 and 22 together as snugly as possible. Near the top of the face-plate 22 is a mortise 26 to receive the tenon 20, and
the upper wall 27 of this mortise is inclined inward, so as to register with the inclined face 21 of the tenon 20.
The fastener is used in the following way: We will suppose that the parts 28 and 29 are to be united. The face-plate 22 is fastened to the part 29, which is recessed opposite the slot 24 and mortise 26, and the latch-head 15 and tenon 20 of the bed-plate 10 are thrust into the slot 24 and mortise 26, and the camlever 17 is then turned downward at right angles to the latch 13, as shown in Fig. 1 and as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and this movement of the cam-lever forces the head 15 downward, so that its inclined face will abut snugly with the inclined wall 25 of the slot 24, and the movement of the lever and 100 bed-plate will cause the inclined wall 21 of the tenon 20 to fit snugly against the wall27 of the mortise 26. It will be seen then that the bed-plate and face-plate will be locked solidly together, so that they cannot accidentally become loose.
29 will thus be securely fastened. If through hard usage or for any reason the tenon 201 should be be broken oif, the latch 13 will hold and the united parts 28 and 29 will still be held together.
If desired, the bed-plate l0 and the face: plate 22 may be countersunk or let into the The bed plate may be then screwed to the piece 28, and the pieces 28 and slot and mortise having oppositely-inclined end walls, a bed-plate havinga swinging latch thereon adapted to enter the face-plate slot and an inclined head to fit the slot, aprojecting tenon with an inclined face to fit the inclined wall of the mortise, and a locking camlever pivoted above the latch and adapted to swing upon the same, substantially as described.
2. A fastening device comprising a faceplate having a slot and-mortise therein with oppositely-inclined end walls, a bed-plate having an end flange adapted to abut with the face-plate, a latch pivoted on the bedplate and extending through a slot in its flange, said latch having an inclined head to enter the slot of the face-plate, a projecting tenonfixed to the bed-plate flange and having an inclined face to register with the inclined wall of the facetplate mortise, and a locking cam-lever pivoted upon the bed-plate and adapted to swing against the top side of the latch, substantially as described.
