FOLDING RULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,419, dated May 24, 1892. Application filed March 7, 1892. Serial No. 424,094. (No model.) Patented in Germany September 10,1885, No. 41,417.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AKOB SATTER, a subj eot of the King of Bavaria, residing at Annweiler, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Rules, (for which I have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 41,417, bearing date September 10, 1885,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in pocket-rules of that class commercially known as folding rules. The several sections constituting such rules are pivoted to swing laterally in opening and closing the rule and heretofore have been provided with suitable spring-catches, which look the sections when open and when closed. Consequently there is a certain resistance to be overcome both in opening and closing the rule.
I The object of my invention is to so construct and arrange the spring-catches that they operate only to lock the rule when open and not when closed, thereby permitting the rule to be opened rapidly and without danger of breaking the sections.
The novel features of my invention are fully pointed out in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of one of the metallic plates secured to the sections. Fig. 2 is a section thereof in the plane 0 19, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane m n, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a face view of one of the plates secured to the adjoining sections. Fig. 5 is a section in the plane q a", Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are longitudinal sections through two adjoining sections of the rule, showing the same respectively in their closed and open positions.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the letter A designates one of the plates secured to the ends of one set of the sections composing the rule, the same being provided with a central hole, as usual, through which the pivot passes in securing the sections together. I) and o are two recesses struck up in the plate and arranged at unequal distances from the pivothole a.
B,Figs. 4 and 5, designates one of the plates secured to the adjoining ends of the second set of rule-sections, the same being provided with a central pivot-hole a, and with springtougues Z Z, arranged at unequal distances from the pivot-hole, said tongues having thereon projections e and f, constructed to match the recesses 17 and c of the plate A.
The projection f of plate B is arranged the same distance from the pivot-hole a as the recess b is and the projection e the same distance from the same as the recess 0 is. Gonsequently the said projections can enter the recesses when opposite the same, as shown in Fig. 7, in which case the rule is open.
\Vhen the rule is closed, Fig. 6, the projection 6 is on the same side of the pivot-hole as the recess b and projection f on the same side as recess 0, and in view of the differences in distances the said projections cannot enter the recesses and the spring-tongues Z Z are pressed into the plane of the plate B. Consequently the rule-sections are not locked and odor little resistance to being opened. When, however, the rule is opened, the projections and recesses interlock and hold the rule-sections open.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a folding rule having its sections provided at adjoining ends with spring-catches arranged on both sides of the pivot and at unequal distances from the same to come opposite each other and to interlock only when the rule is fully opened, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
