UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. EGAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CABINET FOR COAL AND WOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,303, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed March 20, 1891. Serial No. 385,808. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN R. EGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Coal and YVood, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates .to boxes or cabinets fitted bytheir construction to contain fuel, and has for its object the production of a coinpact ornamental case whereby the inconveniences arising from the ordinary manner of storing and using coal and wood or other fuel are obviated; and it consists in the provision of a device simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and eflicient in practical use.
In the drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention,and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section.
Like letters of reference, Wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring again to the drawings, A represents a rectangular cabinet consisting of an exterior casing or housing and divided into two compartments B B by thehorizontal partition E. At the lower portion of the front face is located the door D, which affords communication to both of the interior compartments B B. The cabinet A is provided with a hinged lid 0, which serves for the purpose of supplying the upper reservoir or chamber B with coal or other fuel. Within the compartment B, I secure the inclined Shelf A, which shelf partially supports the coal and also serves as a guide to direct the dropping coal and as a bar to prevent too great a flow of coal over the horizontal partition E. As long as there is any of the fuel in the chamber B a small amount of coal will be found under the lower inner portion of the inclined shelf A which upon being removed for use as occasion demands will be replaced by an equal amount of the dropping coal, a selffeeding movement being thus secured. The lower chamber B serves as a receptacle for wood, to which access maybe obtained, as before stated, by means of the door D.
To the two opposite side edges 1) Z) of the cabinet A, which prevent the coal from falling on the floor when carelessly poured in the said cabinet, are hinged the preferably smaller lids C 0 which may, when required, be sustained in an elevated position by any suitable means, as by the folding supports F F, a table thus being afforded whenever occasion may demand the use of the same.
My cabinet may be paneled or otherwise ornamented and is admirably adapted to facilitate the storage, handling, and use for household, flat, store, office, and similar purposes. It may be made of any desired form and size to suit the location in which it is to be placed.
A box thus constructed not only holds the coal from view, but also keeps all dirt and dust arising from it confined within the same.
As it is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that Ido not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes, and that hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A coal and wood cabinet provided with a hinged lid and with two folding side lids constructed and arranged to occupy substantially the same plane when in a raised position,the cabinet being also provided with an interior inclined shelf and with an outlet-opening and door adjacent to the same, substantially as described.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same, in the city of New York, county and State of New York, this 21st day of January, A. D. 1891.
JOHN R. EGAN.
