DETACHABLE UMBRELLA-COVER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,072, dated May 17, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIUs F. WITT, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Covers for Umbrellas,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of umbrellas wherein a detachable cover is employed, so that when the coverbecomes worn a new one may be substituted without the aid of special appliances or the employment of the services of a skilled workman.

My invention relates more particularly to a means for detachab'ly connecting the margins of the cover to the bows or ribs; and it consists in a peculiar fastening hereinafter described, but particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an umbrella with the detachable cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the outer end of one of the bows, showing the cover in section and my improved fastening secured to the cover and slipped over the bow. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening detached.

In the drawings, A indicates the cover, which is of a suitable textile material, and will be apertured to pass over the tip of the stick B.

0 represents the bows. which Willhave suitable stops 0 toward their outer ends.

My fastening is preferably made of sheet metal having a body D, curved to make it conform to and adapt it to embrace the bow. This body has a narrow extension or neck E and an expanded apertured portion F. This body is apertured, as at d, to adapt it for securement to the cover, and the neck or shank E is curved or bent so that the aperture f of the expanded extension will stand in line with the bows when the cover is applied. I prefer to make the aperture in the body D near to the neck and then to secure the cover thereto, so that when the cover is in place the pull of the material will cause the body to be clamped securely upon the bow. In applying the cover the bows will be bent sufficiently to enable their points to go through the aperture of the fastenings, and they may be thus quickly and readily applied and can scarcely be detected in the completed umbrella.

I am aware that it has been proposed to use metallic sockets, which are affixed to the cover and adapted to receive the ends of the bows; but these socket-pieces are large and unsightly and give the umbrella an inelegant and clumsy appearance.

My fastening is adapted to be used with even the finest goods and can be quickly removed and applied by unskilled workmen.

I claim- 1. In an umbrella, the combination, with the ribs or bows thereof having projections or enlargements thereon toward their outer ends, of a detachable cover and means for securing the margins of the cover to the ends of the bows, said means comprising a metallic fastening constructed from sheet metal and having a body portion bent to engage the bow, and perforations in the ends of said body for attaching the cover and an integral extension beyond said perforations, said extension being downwardly bent and having an aperture therein to receive the end of the bow, whereby the pull of the material causes the body to be clamped upon the bow, substantially as described.
