To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRED W. COOLEY, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Blank-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cabinets or portfolios designed especially for holding legal blanks, though capable of being used as a letter-file or for filing papers of any kind.

The invention consists generally in an open case provided with a hinged front and a pivoted cover capable of being thrown forward beyond the hinged front, so as to leave the top of the casing open.

The invention consists, f urther,in means for tilting the cabinet, so as to cause the papers therein to lie in an inclined position, so as to be convenient of access when the cabinet is open.

The invention consists, further, in the construction and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section; and Fig. 4. is a partial front elevation, the cabinet being open.

In the drawings, 2 represents the casing or back portion of the cabinet, which is preferably of a substantially rectangular form, having an inclined bottom or lower end and open front and top, the top being inclined, also, so as to be substantially parallel with the bot tom. 7 The front 3 is hinged to the front of the casing 2 and is provided with the end portions 5, that lap by the ends of the easing 2.

The top of the cabinet is formed by a cover or hood 7, that is securedto the casing 2 by suitable pivots 9, arranged nearthelower portion thereof. The hood is provided with the downwardly-proj ectin g front piece 11, and the pivots 9 are located at a point farther from the lower end of the hood 7 than from the back of the casing 2, so that when the hood is thrown forward to open the cabinet it occupies the position shown in Fig. 3, the lower end of the hoodstriking against the wall or back plate of the cabinet and throwing the casing 2 forward at its lower end, thereby leaving the cabinet open, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position it will be held until the hood is turned up for the purpose of closing.

The casing 2 may be secured directly to the Wall or to a back plate 13, as by the screws 15, as shown in Fig. 3. The back plate may be secured in position by a suitable screw or other device 17. The hood 7 is provided with a spring-fastening 19, that is arranged to engage a stationary hook 21 as the hood is closed. The inner end of the fastening is provided with a tab or grasping device 23, and when the hood is closed thisend of the fastening rides over theinclined front surface of the hook 21 and engages said hook, thereby fastening the cabinet in its closed position. By grasping the part 23 and raising it from the hook 21 and. drawing back on the hood the cabinet will open and will assume the position shown in Fig. 3. The main portion of the casing will occupy an inclined position, as shown in said figure, and the front 3 will occupy an oppositely-inclined position, as shown in the same figure.

The blanks or papers in the cabinet will lie in an inclined position, resting against the back of the main portion 2 of the cabinet. As they are turned forward they will be brought against the inclined wall of the front portion 3 and will lie in that position.

v The cabinet may, if preferred, be provided with a series of indexed sheets 25, as shown in Fig. 3, which may be connected by a wire 27, and these sheets will serve to separate the blanks or other papers in the cabinet.

I claim as my invention- 1. A portfolio or cabinet comprising a cabinet having an open front and top, a hinged front plate, anda pivoted hood arranged to engage and close over said plate as said hood is closed and to cover the top of the casing.

' 2. The combination, with the casing 2, provided with an open front and top and having an inclined bottom, of a front portion hinged to the lower part of said casing, and a hood pivoted to said casing and arranged to engage the front portion as said hood is being closed and to hold said front portion in a closed position and to cover the top of the casing.

3. The combination, with the casing prothe distance from the pivot to the back of the casing, whereby when the hood is thrown forward the lower end of the casing is moved out from its support.
