SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,919, dated May 17, 1892.

Be it known that I, JOHN F. OBRIEN, a sub 3' eat of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Program Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a holder for programs, bills of fare, wine-lists, and the like, said holder being adapted to receive advertisements.

The invention is intended for use in theaters, hotels, dining-rooms, railway-passenger cars, and like places where persons congregate; and it is the object of my invention to make the holder and advertising device serve a further purpose, in adding to the comfort of the persons using it, thus insuring its use and handling by a large number of persons and causing them to inspect the device and the advertisements more or less during such use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the invention in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a section of the fan, in which the invention is carried out further.

A represents a fan of ordinary construction and preferably adapted to fold up, having ribs a, hinged at 1 and diverging therefrom. At about the center of the fan the program B is attached, it being printed on a separate sheet of paper or like material and attached, preferably at its corners, to the fan by means of the two-pronged-headed pins 1). The arrangement is such that the ordinary use of the fan is not interfered with in any way, the program being for the time practically a part of the fan, and when the fan is folded the program-sheet adapts itself to the folds of the fan and is inclosed by them. The program becomes creased corresponding to the folds of the fan and the opening and closing movement can be performed easily and quickly.

In the use of my invention it is intended that the fans be attached to the seats to remain from week to week as long as desired, and when the performance at the theater is changed the old programs are. removed from the fans and the new ones attached in their places.

The program takes up a comparatively small space on the fan and only on one side, if desired, and the remainder of the space is utilized for miscellaneous advertisements, which maybe printed on the fan on each side of the program and on the back of the fan.

It will be noticed that the advertisements remain permanent throughout the specified time and require only one printing, and it is only necessary to print the program over for each change in the attraction at the house.

I do not wish to limitmyself to the fastening devices shown nor to any particular style of fan, that shown, however, being preferred, in that it takes up little. room when folded,

and when opened presents a sufficiently large surface to make it available-for advertising purposes.

It will be noticed that the program or sheet attached to the fan forms a pocket, and this may be used to conceal a movable supplemental sheet or card B, which may contain any desirable printed matter. For instance, the main sheet may be the bill of fare of the hotel and the small sheet may contain the wine -list; or, when the device is used upon railway-cars, one sheet may contain the time-table and the other the bill of fare of the dining-car. The supplemental card is attached to the fan by an elastic cord'2, and when not in use it is held normally within the pocket. A piece of tape or cordis also at tached to the card, by which it may be drawn out of the pocket for inspection.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a fan, a pocket and a movable card or sheet within said pocket with elastic connections to the fan, substantially as described.
