SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,299, dated May 3, 1892.

Application filed March 22, 1892. Serial No. 425.906- (NO UlOdGl-l To @ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BILL. G. LowEEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Mountain, in the county of Tippah and State of Mississippi, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Sasl1Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to sash-fasteners; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is had to the accompan ying drawing, wherein A represents the window-sash.

B represents a flat spring with its lower end b twisted at an angle of ninety degrees from its upper end b. The said upper end is attached either to a window-sash directly or to a piece b2, preferably having a dat upper su rface b3.

C represents a rack-bar, whiclrmay be either secured to the beading E ofv the win*- dow, as shown, or maybe used as a substitute for the beading. This rack has a number of teeth c with fiat upperfaces and sloping lower faces. Between these teeth areinclined planes c. Above the piece b2, attached to the sash, the pawl D may be pivoted. This pawl has a face CZ, adapted to engage on the upper face of the piece h2 when the said pawl is in the position shown in the dotted lines.

The operation of my device is as follows: The pawl D, being under the tooth c2, which is made square at its base for that purpose, the sash is locked. To raise the window move the pawl D to the right to the position shown in dotted lines and slide the window up until the lower end of the spring B catches on the top of one of the teeth c, the window being at about the desired height. When the window is let go, it will remain supported by the spring B. To close the window or to lowerit somewhat, first raise it sufciently to enable the spring B to engage on the upper surface 0f one of the inclined planes c', when the spring will be thrown out of engagement with the various teeth, and may be lowered to the bottom, when it may be run up again to the desired height; or should it be desired to lower the window a short distance only the lower end b of the spring B may be pressed back with the lingers and the window lowered, and the spring allowed to move into place to catch the lower tooth. By having the spring bent at right angles it may be readily moved either to the side or the rear.

The pawl D for locking the Window may be omitted or not, as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

l. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with a rack-bar attached to the window-frame and having a plurality of teeth with flat upper faces and sloping lower faces and inclined planes between said teeth, substantially as described, of a spring attached to the sash and adapted to catch on the upper edges of said teeth and to slide on said inclined planes.

2. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with a rack-bar attached to the window-frame and having a plurality of teeth with flat upper faces and sloping lower faces and inclined planes between said teeth, substantially as described, of a dat spring with its lower end twisted at right angles to the upper, the said upper end being attached to the sash and the said lower end being adapted to catch on the upper edges of said teeth and to slide on said inclined planes.
