UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT LANGE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
VAPOR-BATHI NG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,935, dated May 3, 1892.
Application filed November 17,1891. Serial No. 412.133. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Bathing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap portable steam or hot-air bathing-cabinet which may be readily put together and taken apart and which is especially fitted for use in barber-shops, hotels, and in the homes of families.
Theinvention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure lis a vertical sectional View of an apparatus constructed in accord ance with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line x a: of Fig. 1.
The cabinet, as shown, is composed of five walls-namely, the rear wall A, the side walls 13 B, front wall O, and top Wall D-all separably united and resting in a base-board or pan E.
The side walls at their rear edges are provided with screw-bolts a, which pass through the rear wall and receive a thumb-nut 0/. The front edges of the side walls 13 B are held in position with respect to each by rods 6, having hooks b at their ends, which enter eyes 0 in the side walls.
The front wall of the cabinet is made in three parts 1 2 3. The part 1 is made about the height of an ordinary stair, and is provided with hooks cl d, which catch over the lower rod 1). I may add to this part 1 a step e to receive the foot of a person entering the cabinet; but the upper edge of the part 1 may suffice for this purpose. The part 2 of the front wall is provided at its lower edge with two projecting buttons f, which fit behind the upper edge of the part 1 and thereby hold said lower edge in place, while the upper end of part 2 is held 111 place by hooks d d, which catch over the upper rod b. The part 3 of the front wall is provided at its lower edge with projecting buttons g, which engage with the upper edge of the part 2 and hold said lower edge in place. For the sake of economy and convenience the upper part of the front wall may be inclined, as shown. The vertical edges of the parts 1 2 3 and the under side of the top D may be provided with beads or strips h to render the joints nearer steamrtight.
The top wall D is composed of two parts 5 and 6, and has an opening t'to receive the neck of the patient.
Upon the inner sides of the walls 13 B, I secure two series of horizontally-arranged beads or cleats 7a, which form groove-like recesses to receive the slatted seat F and the slatted foot-rest G. Either steam or hot air may be used, as desired.
In the drawings I have shown a gas-burner connected by means of a flexible tube with a gas-fixture, which may be provided with a supplementary cock for this purpose. When it is desired to use steam, a vessel H is supplied with water; or, if desired, any suitable vaporizable medicinal substance is placed upon the burner.
A thermometer I, supported in a pocket on one of the walls, may be used to indicate the temperature within the cabinet. The temperature, of course, may be regulated by adjusting the flame at the burner.
My improved cabinet may be put together and taken apart by any one having ordinary intelligence, no tools nor special skill being required. It may also be packed into a very small space-for transportation or storage.
The seat and foot-rest are adjustable, so that persons with long legs and short bodies, or vice versa, may use it with equal comfort and advantage. It is obvious, also, that the slatted seat and foot rest permit the free circulation of the steam or air about the body.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a portable cabinet for vapor or hot-air baths, the back A, sides B B, means for separably uniting the back and sides, eyes 0 at the front of the sides, rods 19, adapted to de- In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in taehably engage said eyes to maintain the presence of two Witnesses. sides in position, and the front 0 or sections thereof provided with hooks d, arranged to ROBERT LANGE' 5 engage the rods to hold the front or sections WVitnesses:
thereof in place, substantially as shown and GEO. M. FINOKEL,
described. THos. F. M. KooH.
