WIRE DESK-BASKET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS G. BEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVire Desk-Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of baskets which are used on and for desk purposes, and especially to those made of woven wire, which by reason of the material employed are liable to scratch or deface the desk or other piece of furniture with which they come in contact; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and novel arrangement of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed. 7

The object of my invention is to provide without materially increasing the cost thereof such a basket the body of which will be rai ed or supported free from the surface of the desk or other piece of furniture on which it is used by means of a number of small posts or feet of rubber or other flexible and soft material. v

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in

which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a deskbasket embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the supporting-posts and its securing-clamp. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the post. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one mesh of the basket, showing a modification of the clamp and post in place. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the modified form of the posts. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the modification of the post-securing clamp.

A represents a basket, which may be made of wire of uniform size, except the marginal or rim wire a,to which the strands composing the body of the basket are secured, 011 which account it must necessarily be somewhat larger; but in order to prevent the bottom of the basket sagging I prefer to construct it, as shown, with two wires 1) Z2, somewhat larger and stiffer than those composing the other parts of the body, near each end and extend places in any desired manner, the object being to stiffen the bottom of the basket. stiffening-rods b b or reinforced wires and near the corners of the basket I secure the post-retaining clamps B, which are made of sheet metal and preferably of the form shown in Fig. 2, the lower portion of which is provided with a holec of proper size and form to accommodate the post 0, which it receives and retains. The free ends of the clamps B are formed with catches c by bending the metal upward and then inward, the lower one of which is adapted to engage with one of the stiffening-rods bor reinforced wires, as shown in Fig. 2'in dotted lines, and the other to overlap and engage with it. It will thus be seen and understood that the clamp B is made of a piece of metal of sufficient length to be dou bled over one of the rods 1) or wires forming the meshes and to engage with the other one, and that, while the lower portion thereof, with its hole 0, will act asa bearing for the post 0, the upper portion will prevent it being displaced vertically.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the posts O are formed with a head or annular flange c ,which flange rests on the upper surface of the lower portion of the clamp B and prevents the post dropping out through the hole-c.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A desk-basket having a number of posts, made of rubber or similar material, secured to its bottom by means of clamps, substantially as described, whereby the body of the basket will be supported free from the surface of the desk or other piece of furniture on which it is used and is prevented from scratching the .fsamfi, substantially as and for the purpose set ort a 2. The combination of a basket having a portion of its bottom reinforced, substantially as described, wit-h a number of posts, made of rubber or similar material, secured to the lower portion of said basket by means of clamps, and the said clamps having holes for the reception of the posts, and catches to engage the wires of the basket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a Wire desk-basket, the combination of a basket having the stiffening-rods b 1), forming a part of the mesh-Work, with a number of posts 0, having the heads 0 secured to the lowerportion ot' the basket by means of clamps B, and said clamps having holes 0 in their lower portion for the reception of the posts cured thereto near each corner by means of .clamps B, and said clamps made of one piece of sheet metal, havingin their lower portions the holes 0 for the reception of the posts 0 and their ends formed with catches c to engage with the wires of the basket, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a desk-basket composed .of wire, the combination of the basket having a portion of its bottom reinforced, substantially as described, with a number of posts 0, made of rubber or similar material, having the heads 0 secured thereto near each corner by means of clamps B, and said clamps made of one piece of sheet metal, having in their lower portions the holes 0 for the reception of the posts 0 and their ends formed with catches c to engage with the Wires of the basket, all

- constructed, arranged, and operating substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
