SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 470,848, dated March 15, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. J AOKSON, a-

citizen of Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in buckles, its object being to produce a buckle which shall be particularly adapted for use with rough harness-such as plow-harness and to provide said buckle with means whereby a trace-chain may be easily and quickly attached thereto, and also with means for holding the plow-line.

A further object is to produce a buckle for the purpose stated which shall be simple in construction, comprising a small number of parts, cheap to manufacture, and effective in the performance of its functions.

NVith these objects in view the invention consists in the combination, with a buckleframe and clamping-bars, of a ring or loop pivotally connected thereto.

The invention also consists in the combination, with a buckle-frame and clamping-bar, of a ring or loop pivotally connected to one edge of said frame and a hook at the opposite end-thereof.

The invention further consists in the combination, with a buckle -frame, of a rigid toothed bar, a pivoted toothed bar, a loop at one edge of said frame, and a hook at the opposite edge.

The invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.

A represents the buckle-frame, consisting of top and bottom bars a b and end bars 0. The end bars a are provided with integral upturned lugs or ears (I, provided with perforations for the reception of the ends of a clamping-bar B, said clamping-bar being provided with teeth e and a lip f, by means of which to operate said clamping-bar. The

clamping-bar B may be madeof a single piece of metal having the teeth e and lip f made of a solid rod Z, having a sheet-metal covering thereon, said sheet-metal cover being provided with teeth and a lip. This latter method of making the clamping-bar I find to be an easy and cheap one and gives good results;

Extending from end to end of the frame, preferably immediately under the pivoted clamping-bar B and integral with the frame, is a rigid clamping-bar 0, having a series of teeth g, adapted to project somewhat from the face of the buckle, and located in proximity to the ends of the teeth g is a cross-bar D, also preferably integral with the frame A. The top of the frame A is provided with two ears, which are bent or formed into loops h for the reception of a pin 2'. Pivotally connected to the pin "L is a loop D, through which a plow-line may be passed, and by pivotally connecting said loop to the buckle it may readily be moved out of the way when it is desired to insert the strap E of the harness. The lower edge of the frame A is provided with an arm j, to which a hook 7c is secured. This hook is preferably projects upwardly and is provided with a downwardly-projecting lip Z to prevent the escape from said hook of a trace-chain which this hook is intended to receive. The strap E is passed through the buckle, as shown in Fig. lthat is to say, the strap is passed under the cross-bar a, then over the bars 0 D and under the pivoted cross-bar, and finally under the cross-bar b and armj of the frame.

It is evident that slight changes might be made in the constructive details of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
