Description

(No lv lodell) I J. L. BIBDER. ATTACHMENT FOR-LAWN MOWERS.
No. 469,916. Patented Mar. 1, 1892. I
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
J'AoonL BIEDER, oE CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ATTACHMENT FOR LAWN-MOWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,916, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed August 8. 1891.
T ttZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB L. BIEDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grass Catching Attachments for Lawn-Mowers, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to lawn-mowers, and has for its object to provide a grass-catching attachment which shall be adjustable in height, depth, and breadth, rendering it capable of adjustment to various sizes and kinds of lawn-mowers, resulting in great convenience of attachment and economy, expense, and time. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a lawn-mower having my catcher attached. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the catcher.
The catcher consists of a receptacle, preferably made of canvas, in the top edges of which, in the hem, is a wire frame a, the ends of which arebrought down to the front corners and are bent to be inserted in the hem of the lower front edge of the receptacle. The ends of the wire are not secured together, but are lapped by each other to-enable the'front end of the catcher to be contracted. In the lower corners of the receptacle is also provided a wire frame b,the front ends of which are also bent and inserted in the hem and are lapped in like manner to the upper frame and for the same purpose.
c c are clips for attaching the corners of the catcher to the mower, and consist of bent strips of metal embracing the brace-arms of the mower-handle and are provided with Serial No. 402,175- (No model-l screw-bolts for clamping them to the catcher. The clips may be provided with nibs or lugs for insertion in the eyelets d in the catcher, a series of which are provided for enabling the catcher to be adjustably attached to mowers in height,-depth, and breadth, as may be required. Should the bottom of the catcher be made of sheet metal, it may be split length-- wise through the middle and the two parts lap to enable the front edge to be contracted or expanded for adjustment; but the canvas does not require splitting, as the fabric may be gathered at the edge to adapt it to adjustment. The rear end of the catcher is suspended from the handle by means of a cord or'chain, snap-hook and ring, or other suitable means.
Having described my inv'entiou,I claim 1. In a grass-catcher for lawn-mowers, the receptacle having wire frame a in top edge and a frame I) in lower corners, the forward ends of said frames extending across the lower front edge of the canvas and loosely lapped within the seam of the same, by
means of which the catcher may be adjusted in breadth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A lawn-mower provided with a grasscatcher consisting of a receptacle having supporting-frames in top and bottom, the ends of said frames lapped together in the front edge, eyelet-holes in the upper front corners, and clips for adjustably attaching the catcher, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
