SAFETY-POCKET FOR GARM ENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,721, dated March l, 1892.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JOHN E. REPLOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets for Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, that will enable Others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make anduse the saine.

My invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the pending claim. v

In the accompanying drawings l have shown my invention inthe best form now known to me; but obvious changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my inveniion, as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the base or main. portion o f my clasp. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the swinging loop detached. Fig. 3 is a view partly in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, showing the loop in the. position assumed when the pocket is opened. Fig. 4. is a perspective View of a portion of a garment having a pocket that isprovided with my spring-clasp, the pocket being shown in the opened position. Fig. 5 is a similar Vview of the same with the pocket closed. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the mouth of the pocket shown in the opened position.

The frame or base A of the clasp consists of a U-shaped fiat plate, preferably stamped out of sheet-brass, and is rolled or lianged at its edges a to stiffen it. At the extremity of each leg A is a notch a', the metal at each side of the notch being turned up to form ears h, between which ,the legs of the loop B are mounted on pivots b. Flat steel springs C are secured tothe back of the legs of the frame, their free ends covering the back of the notches in such position as to bear against the ends of the loop. These ends of the'loop b2 are enlarged and squared,so as to present the opening position, when vthey will bear against the ends of the loop-legs to hold the pocket open, as will be readily understood.

The clasp is especially designed for use in connection with change or ticket pockets in mens coats;y but it may be used with good effect in other garments. Figs. 4., 5, and 6 clearly show this special application, the section of garment preferably representing the flap or edge of a coat or overcoat with a change pocket. The frame or base of the clasp is iirmly attached to the garment between the outer fabric D and the lining d, the ends of its legs A projecting through apertures in the cloth to the outside. The wire loop B, which is pivoted between the lugs Z) of the frame is sewed or otherwise attached to the edgev of the pocket-iiap E, preferably between the lining and the outer fabric of the flap, so as not to be conspicuous when the flap is down and the pocket opened. The pocketlining or pocket proper is represented by f, and this lining may constitute the inner lining or facing of the flap, as shown in Figs. 4. and 6.

I have shown my guard-flap as being connected to the outside of the pocket and folding up against the coat to close the pocket;

.but it might be applied to the ordinary flaps that fold down over the edge of the pocket to close it in the usual Way, the spring-clasp holding it against accidentally opening.
