FLOOR THIMBLE Patented Feb. 16, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON G. ANDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ILLINOIS MALLEABLE IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. I
FLooR-THlMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,005, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed April 17, 1891.
f serai No. 389,322. (No modem To all wwm z5 may con/cern:
Beit known that I, ANTON G. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinveuted a new and useful Improvement in Floor-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of devices employed for incasing 1o steam-pi pes where they pass through the floor and ceiling, and which are technically termed lioor-thimbles.
The objects of my improvement are to providea\corrstrticiofV Vfloor-thimble whereby r 5 it may be readily lengthened and shortened to adjust it with considerable accuracy according to the length of the passagfor it through a door and ceiling, and to yadapt it to be clamped and reliably secured against dis- 2o engagement of its telescopic sections by a ceiling-plate, which is at the same time held in place by' its clamping function.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View representing a broken portion of a ceiling and ioor in section with my improved thimble operativelyapplied to a steam-pipe, shown as broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a ceiling-plate. Fig. 3 is a broken view in elevation showing an inclined slot in the lower 3o portion of the external of the two telescopic sections of the thimble. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the internalsection provided with a vertical series of alternating seats. Fig. 5 is a broken perspective view showing the upper portion of the external section provided internally with a stud to engage the seats on the internal section and support thereon the external section.
A and A are pipe-sections, the former be- 4o ing of a diameter to admit the latter, and thus alford a floor-thimble adapted to be extended or contracted telescopically to correspond with the thickness of the partition B, forming the oor and ceiling portions of divided apartments and through which a steam-pipe C,
passes, and is there incased by the floor-thimble. The inner pipe-section A is provided at. its outer end wi th a stop, preferably in the form of a flange r, and lengthwise along ne side 5o (or more than one side, it' desired) with a sej pipe-section.
ries D of seats, formed, preferably, as pockets q, inclining downward in opposite directions from the opposite sides of a straight guidegroove p, which should be continued, as shown in Fig. 4t, below the series of seats. Near the 55 lower end of the outer pipe-section is an inclined slot 0, having the entrance 0 to it extending from the extremity of the section. As in the case of the series of seats D, the slots o may be provided in duplicate, or may 6o be further multiplied on different sides ofthe Near the upper end of the ex# ternal pipe-section A, inside the same, is a stud n, adapted to enter the groove p in the inner pipe-section when inserted into the outer one, and permit them to be relatively extended or contracted to any desired length, when by turning the section A-to bring its stud n into the adjacent seat-pocket q it will be suspended therein. As will be noticed, 7o the pockets q at opposite sides of the groove p alternate with each other, thereby to decrease the distance between the bases of adjacent alternating members of each pair and increase accordingly the capacity for accurate adjustment.
lVhile not so desirable, the series of seats D and stud or studs 'n may obviously be provided, respectively, on the inner surface of the outer pipe-section and on the outer surface of 8o the inner pipe-section.
.With the thimble adjusted in place, as represented in Fig. 1, around a steam-pipe C, unless means be provided to prevent, there is more or less liability of the suspended lower pipe-section becoming disengaged from its support in a manner to cause the stud n to coincide with the guidegroove p when it would fall. I prevent any such tendency by adapting a ceiling-plate E to perform, in ad- 9o dition to its usual and Well-known function, that of a clamp-nut, by providing it, at a suitable point on its inner periphery, with a stud m, (one for each slot 0,) whereby to apply the ceiling-plate its stud enters the said slot, and by turning the ceiling-plate in the proper direction it becomes tightened in place against the surface of the ceiling by the resultant strain exerted on the thimble, which is held at its upper end by the stop r, whereby, roo
also, the stud n is prevented from risingin its respective seat q, and cannot, therefore, gain access to the groove p.
To further secure the ceiling plate in its adjusted position againstturning back, and th us loosening the parts, I prefer to provide it with a set-screw Z to bear against the pipe-section and hold the ceiling-plate.
VhatvI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination, a floor-thimble formed with telescoping pipe-sections provided with adjustable mutual engaging means and a clamping ceiling-plate adapted to encircle the lower pipe-section and adjustable in its operative position to co-operate with the surface against which it is applied and with the lower pipesection and tighten the telescoping sections in their distended relative positions, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a loor-thimble formed with telescoping pipe-sections A and A', provided on opposing surfaces, respectively, Wit-h a stud and a series of seats composed of pockets extending from opposite sides of a longitudinal groove, a flange on the outer end of the section A', an inclined groove near the vouter end of the section A, and a ceilingplate having a stud to enter the said groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination, a oor-thixnble formed with telescoping pipe-sections A and A', provided on opposing surfaces, respectively, With a stud and a series of seats composed of pockets extending from and alternating with each other on opposite sides of a longitudinal groove, a iange on the outer end of the section A', an inclined groove near the outer end of the section A, and a ceiling-plate having a stud to enter the groove and provided With a set-screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:, In combination, a Hoor-thimble comprising telescoping pipe-sections A and A', the inner section having a flange fr and a series D of seats` formed with pockets q inclining in opposite directions from opposite sides of a longitudinal groove p, and the outer section having inside, toward one end, a stud n, and outside, near its opposite end, an inclined groove 0, and a ceiling-plate E, having a stud m on its inner periphery engaging the groove o and a set-screw Z, the Whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
