SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,679, dated May 16, 1893. Application iilerl December 9, 1892. Serial No. 454,657. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ALONZO NEWBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coxsackie, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Beam-Clamp for Pipe-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in beam-clamps, and consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is adapted to be adjusted to fit varying sizes of beams, and having a depending part for the purpose of suspending various devices, the parts thereof being simple and eifective in their construction and operation and easily handled and understood.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device shown applied in connection with a flanged beam. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the dogs and its securing bolt. y
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a bar, having slots 2 in the ends thereof, and upper toothed or corrugated edges 3, with recesses 4 between said edges, and in the center of the said bar is avertieal 6 surrounding the upper portion thereof. On the upper endportions Of the said bar 1 are mounted dogs 7, whose under sides are formed obliquely, at the outer ends, to a horizontal portion of each to provide an engaging end 8, adapted to take into the corrugated or toothed edges 3, and each having a centrally depending nose or lug 9, which is adapted to be located in the recesses 4, and prevent lateral movement of the outer ends of the dogs as well as act as a guide for the same when they are adjusted. The horizontal portions 10 of said under sides are adapted to engage the flanges of the beam when the device is applied. The upper sides of the dogs are formed with curved recesses 11, having vertical edge-iianges 12, and through the centers of the said dogs, or approximately the centers, are openings 13, in which are located bolts 14, having their heads situated in the said recesses'in the upper sides of the dogs, to thereby bring the said heads in contact with the anges 12, and prevent turning of the bolts. The said bolts 14 extend through the slots 2, and havefree movement therein, during the adjustment of the said dogs.
In mounting the devicein position, the dogs are fitted over the edges of a flanged beam 16, as fully shown in Fig. l, and the nuts on the bolts 14 are then adjusted to securely clamp the said dogs in connection with the said beam, as set forth.
By means of the adjustability of the dogs, the device is adapted to be applied to beams of various sizes or widths, thereby providing a simple and convenient device. A bolt 17 loosely depends from the bar 1, and has the head 18 thereof bearing against the shoulder 19, formed by the recess 6. The lower end of f the bolt is screw-threaded and has'a nut 19 applied thereto, and may be readily attached to a pipe-clamp or other device adapted to be suspended thereby.
The advantages and utility of the device will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and need not be further enlarged upon herein.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a beam clamp, the combination of a transversely-extending bar having acentrallylocated depending suspending-bolt, and dogs loosely and adj ustably mounted in connection with the upper sides of the opposite ends of the said bar, and adapted to have a part of the same rest on the flanges of the beam, substantially as described.
2. In a beam clamp, the combination of a bar having slotted ends with teeth or corrugations on the upper side thereof, dogs mounted on the said ends and having bolts extending through the same and the said slots Of the bar, `and a centrally located depending suspending bolt, substantially as described.
3. In a beam clamp, the combination of a bar having slots extending through-the oppo- Ioo site ends thereof, and teeth or corrugations on the upper side of the bar adjacent to said slots, dogs mounted on the said ends of the beam and having recesses and flanges at the upper side thereof, bolts extending through said dogs and the slots of said bal', and a centrally depending suspending bolt, substan-l tially as described.
