To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL OLEARY, a Y citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of 0nondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Floor Connections for Closet-Bowls and Soil-Pipes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawingsnis a full7 clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved floor connection for a soil pipe and closet bowl involving the use of a suitable packing ring between the base of the bowl and pipe to prevent leakage at the joint.

The main object is to provide simple means whereby the packing ring may be conveniently adjusted from the exterior of the bowl after the latter has been firmly placed in operative position upon the Hoor in connection with the soil pipe.

Other objects and uses relating to speciic parts of the device will be brought out in the following description.

In the drawings Figure l is a horizontal sectional view of the base of a closet bowl showing the means forclamping the bowl to the soil pipe and the additional means for adjusting the packing ring after the bowl has been properly placed or set up. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detached collar which is attached to the upper end of the so-il pipe, showing the threaded studs by which the base Hange of the bowl is secured to the collar. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on line 4 4.' Fig. l, showing the manner of adjusting the packing ring from the exterior of the bowl. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detached packing ring. In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have shown portions of'4 a closet bowl -l-, and soil pipe -Qfas alined with each other through an opening -ain a floor -A for direct communication one with the other7 the bowl V--lbeing provided with the usual flanged base -w of sufficient diameter to rest upon the floor around the opening -aand also provided with a reduced annular flange --4 depending from the center thereof and coaxial with the soil pipe 2 to form a continuation of the opening therethrough into the bowl7 the adjacent ends of the flange .-4- andpipe 2f being both extended into the opening in the Hoor. A collar Se- 1s attached to thev upper end of the pipe -2-, preferably by screw threads, so as to form a gas and liquid-tight joint and also to permit limited adjustment of the'collar relatively to the floor to which it is secured by suitable fastening means as screws -6-.

As illustrated, theV collar is circular and Vprovided intermediate its lower and upper ends with a laterally projecting annular fiange -7- resting upon the floor and provided at intervals with apertures for receiving the fastening screws 6-, the lower portion of the collar being inserted in the opening The interior diameter of the upper part of the collar is somewhat larger than that of its lower end which is secured to the pipe -2 and is also of greater diameter than the eX- terior diameter of the flange -4- to form an annular chamber for the reception of an adjustable*follower or packing ring -8--, said collar being provided with a conical face -9- between its ends to form a seat for the packing ring or follower -8- which is closely fitted upon the exterior or periphery of the flange -llbut so as vto be movable axially thereon.

The base flange -8- of the closet is provided with a. substantially flat horizontal portion -10 and a vertical portion -11 depending from the marginal edge thereof so as to rest upon the upper face of the floor -A--, thus forming with the inner flange l-- a chamber -lQ- of sufhcient size to receive and conceal the collar 5f and packing ring -8- when the closet bowl is adjusted forl use.

The flange -7- of the collar -5- is within the upright portion -11- of the base flange -3- andis provided with a plurality of7 4 in this vinstance four, vertically rising wise rigidly secured thereto lto prevent turning, said bolts being passed loosely through apertures -14- in the horizontal portions -10- of the base flange -3 and are also passed loosely through and above apertured blocks -15- which rest upon the horizontal portions -10-, the upper ends of the bolts being threaded and engaged by nuts -16-, whereby the base flange -3- is firmly clamped against the upper face of the floor -A-, and at the same time serves to secure the block -15- in fixed relation to the base flange and the base flange in fixed relation to the collar so that the soil pipe and bowl become firmly connected as a unit when the closet is adjusted for use.

rlhe follower or packing ring -8- is provided with a series of, in this instance four, radially projecting bearings -8- adapted to be engaged by a corresponding number of adjusting screws -17 which are secured in threaded apertures .18- in the blocks -15-.

Each of the bolt openings -14- is preferably of suflicient circumferential length to receive one of the bolts -lB- and the adj acent adjusting screw -17- so that each of the' blocks 15 which receives one of the bolts -13- and adjacent adjusting screw -17- overhangs the corresponding opening i4- and adjacent arm or bearing -8- of the follower 8-, thus allowing the adjusting screws to extend some distance above the base flange w3-- of the closet bowl where it is always accessible for manipulation by screw driver or other suitable implenient for tightening4 the collar or packing ring when necessary without in any way disturbing any of the other connections or fastenings by which the bowl is connected to the floor and to the soil pipe.

In order that the bearings -8-- for the adjusting screwr-lY- may be positively and accurately registered with said adjusting screws, the collar -5- is provided with an upstanding flange -l9 having a series of, in this instance four, recesses 20- of substantially the same width and in the saine spaced relation as said arms or bearings to receive the saine and allow limited axial adjustment of the follower by means of the adjusting` screw 17- after the bowl is secured in place.

The follower is provided with an inner packing section -21- which might be the flanged upper end of the soil pipe in case the latter should be made of lead. In Fig. (3, however, this packing section is omitted and the lower face of the follower is conical for direct engagement with the conical bearing -9- of the collar -5-.

In placing the closet bowl, the collar 5*- is first attached to the upper end of the soil pipe 2- and firmly secured to thefloor by the screws and then after placing the packing ring -8- over and upon the flange 4 of the bowl, the latter is placed in position so as to bring the base: flange --3-w over and around the upper end of the' collar -5- to rest upon the upper face of the floor, during which operation the bolts or studs 13- will enter their respective apertures 14- in the base flange, whereupon the blocks -15- are placed upon the Y bolts and the nuts i6- tightened to draw the lower marginal edge of the base flange -3- firmly against the floor and to simultaneously lock it to the collar -5- and,

What I'claim is:

A floor and soil pipe connection for closet" bowls, said bowl having its base provided with a central annular flange co-axial with the soil pipe and a relatively larger annular flange resting upon the floor and forming with the inner annular flange an inter- 1 vening chamber, a collar attached to the upper end of the soil pipe and extending into said chamber, means for securing the collar to the floor, studs secured to the col- Y lar and projecting upwardly through opeiiings in the base of the bowl between said flanges, blocks slidably fitted on the upper ends of said studs and resting upon the base of the bowl, nuts engaging the upper ends of the studs for clamping the blocksl` In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of September, 1915.
