G. E. WI'NTRODE. ADJUSTABLE WIRE TWISTING WRENCH.
N0. 468,718. Patented Feb. 9, 1892.
lllllmllfllllllllflllllllllll I NVENTU FL W W WITNEESEE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. IVINTRODE, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE WIRE-TWISTING WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,718, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed september 1'7, 1891- Serial No. 405,990- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WINTRoDE, of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable VVire-Twisting Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable wire twisting wrenches; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my present invention is to provide an implement for twisting the wire between pickets in construction of what is known as \vire-and-slat fence, and to so construct the implement with three separate jaws, which are pivotally connected to a central plate or plates and held by clampingscrews, so that the jaws can be set to fit any sized wire, and which is so arranged that it can be set to use one or all of the jaws, as preferred, and then be securely clamped in the adjusted position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an implement embodying my invention, the jaws being shown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the jaws being shown closed. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the implement.
A indicates a central plate, which is provided with three arms B, which extend outward therefrom, as shown. I have here shown two of these plates A placed parallel and each provided with the corresponding arms B, and prefer to use two, though it will be understood that a single plate could be used, if, desired. These two plates are placed a suitable distance apart and have placed between them the jaws C, each of which is provided with the handle D. The inner edges E of these jaws are placed at an angle to each other, as shown, and their outer edges are rounded. The plate A is provided with the three pivotal holes F, and each of the jaws is provided with a pivotal bolt or hole at its inner point or apex, and passing through the pivotal holes of the plates are the pivotal pins or bolts G. Passing through holes made in the outerends of the arms B of the plate A are the clamping-bolts H, and the jaws O' are provided with curved slots I under the openings, through which the clamping-bolts pass. As shown in Fig. 2, these jaws when closed have their angular edges E to rest against each other; but by loosening the clam ping-bolts II, which pass through the arms B and the slots I of the jaws, and taking hold of the handles the jaws can be turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, which forms a space between their angular edges for the insertion of the fence-wires to be twisted.
The jaws are turned upon their pivotal points to any desired point, and then by tightening the clamping-bolts H they are securely held in their adjusted position. In this manner the angular edges of the jaws can be set any desired distance apart to fit fence-wires of different thicknesses. So, also, should either of the jaws or handles become injured or broken, it can be readily removed from the plates and another placed therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A wire-twister comprising a plate having a series of arms, jaws pivoted-thereto having handles and having slots outside of their pivotal points, and clamping-bolts which pass through the said arms and the slots of the jaws, substantially as set forth.
2. A Wire-twister comprising a plate having arms, separate jaws pivoted thereto at their inner port-ions, and clamping-bolts in the arms outside of the said pivotal points for holding the I said jaws, substantially as described.
3. A wire-twister comprising a plate hav ing arms, separate angular jaws having parallel edges, the inner apexes of the said jaws being pivoted to the plate, and clamping-bolts in the arms for securing the said jaws against movement in relation to each other, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses;
CHARLES E. IVINTRODE.
