PORTABLE H EAD- REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,505, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed August 7, 1891. Serial No. 401,953, (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ZEPHANIAH F. MAGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and usefulImprovements in Portable Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

Figure l is a side view of the device with handle closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with handle extended. Fig. 3 is a side view showing a modification of handle. Fig. 4 is a crosssection on line 6 6, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a crosssection on line 7 70f Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a partial front elevation, the parts being in the situation indicated in Fig. 2.

My improved device consists of a standard A, provided with a concaved foot A on one end, adapted to rest upon theloack of a seat,

and at the other end with a cushion-rest A for the head of a person in a devotional attitude. The cushion-rest may be concaved, as shown, to fit the forehead of the person, and the device may be wholly or in part upholstored or ornamented in any known manner, as desired. The cushion-rest serves to form a head-support and may be of any desired form, although I prefer to elongate it in a direction extending crosswise of the forehead.

O is a folding handle hinged to the standard by the pin 0, supported by the ears 0 secured to the standard, as by rivets C The handle is provided with a longitudinal slot 0 adapted to receive and form a slideway for the pin. When in use, the handle is swung out at right angles to the standard, with the pin at the inner end of the slot, as shown in Fig. 2. For convenience in transportation, when not in use, the handle is folded against the standard. When desired, the pin which passes through the handle-slot may also pass through an aperture in the standard itself, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and the handle be clamped in the desired position by means of a thumb-nut- D. The pin has a head D on one end, adapted to engage the handle, and screw-threads D on the other end, adapted to enter and fit similar threads in the nut. The handle can be swung and slid from the folded position shown by the solid lines in Fig. 3 to the position shown by dotted lines in the same figure, and clamped in such position by turning the nut tightly against the standard or a washer D interposed between the standard and nut. A washer D may also be interposed between the standard and handle.

I am thus able to provide a convenient portable head-rest which will afford a comfortable support forthe head while in a devotional attitude, as at prayer during church services.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a portable head-rest, the combination, with a standard having a concaved foot on one end and a rigid head-support on the other, of a slotted handle hinged to the standard and extending at right 'angles to the head-rest and adapted to be folded parallel with the standard, and means for securing said handle in any desired position, substantiatly 'as set forth.

2. In a portable headrest, the combination of a standard having a convexed foot on one end and a transversely-arranged concaved head on the other end, a handle having a slot 0 and a pin passing through said slot and connected with the standard, the handle be ing adapted to swing about the pin in a plane transverse to the head and to be moved lengthwise thereon.
