EXTENSION ASH-PAN AND FENDER.

Be it known that I, THOMAS L. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Ash-Pans and Fenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved ashpan for fire'grates; and it consists in a metallic pan capable of being extended in length and height, together with a detachable front, also capable of being elongated to correspond with the length of the pan, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved ash-pan having the adjustable pieces for increasing the height removed therefrom. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line X X, which shows the said adjustable pieces in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable means for increasing the height of the pan and showing the same detached from the apparatus. Fig. 4: is a perspective View of a portion of the adjustable front piece.

To put my invention into practice I provide a pan 1, constructed in two pieces and the one capable of sliding within the other by means of bent or flanged portion 2, formed 011 the upper edges of the one section overlapping the top edges of the other. By this construction of a pan the same may be elongated or shortened to correspond with the size of the fire-place for which it is intended.

Arranged on the interior walls of each of these sections 1 is a series of staples 3, properly placed and adapted to engage with downwardly projecting lugs 4, attached to the side walls of two L-sha-ped pieces 5, which form a means for increasing or lessening the height of the pan. These side pieces 5 consist in two pieces of sheet metal substantially L-shaped and the one adjustably attached to the other in the same manner as the pan above described. I now provide a removable front piece 6, consisting of two pieces ad j ustably attached together in amanner that the said front may be lengthened to fit the pan, and each section provided with an inner inclined flange 7, which serves to hold the said front piece in position and also guide the ashes into the pan.

In operation this construction of an ashpan may be adjusted to thelength and height of any ordinary fire-grate, and thereby avoid the necessity of manufacturing pans of various sizes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The herein-described adjustable ash-pan for fire-grates, consisting of the pan 1, constructed in two sections and capable of being lengthened or shortened,the adjustable pieces for increasing the depth of the pan, and the adjustable and removable front portion having an inclined flange arranged to guide the ashes into the pan and also to afford a means for holding the said front piece in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
