Be it known that we, PERLEY W. CAMERON, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, and FRANK J. DIL- LON, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Bits; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in medicine-bits through which medicine inay be administered to animals.

The object of the invention is to produce a bit of the nature described which is adapted to facilitate the administering of medicine to horses or other animals without the usual excessive labor and waste of the medicine.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the bit and the combination therewith of the forcing device as well as certain other elements of combination, as will more fully be described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a view of the bit proper, showing the spring-supports. Fig. 2 represents a view of the curved tube by which the pill or powder holder is secured to the bit. Fig. 3 represents a view of the cup adapted to contain the pill or powder. Fig. 4 represents a view of the bent side bars by which the bit is held in position in the horses mouth. Fig. 5 represents a view of the injection-tube. Fig. 6 represents a view of a bent pipe used for flushing the horsesmouth. Fig. 7 represents a View of the forcing device adapted to be secured to the bit and the flexible tube by which the forcing device may be connected with a reservoir containing medicine. Fig. 8 represents a view of the sprayer. Fig. 9 represents a longitudinal sectional View of the bit, showing the transverse opening into which the various attachments are screwed.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In the drawings, 10 indicates the tubular bit-bar, closed at one end by the screw-plug 11 and having the opposite tapering end 12, over which the end portion of a rubber tube maybe stretched and secured. At or near the longitudinal center the bit-bar is provided with the transverse opening 13,which is screwthreaded to receive corresponding threads formed on the ends of the various appliances adapted to be secured to the bit-bar. Near the ends of the bit-bar are secured the rings 14 14, and to these are hooked the coiled springs 15 15, having hook-shaped ends by which they are fastened to the rings 14 14 and at the other ends to some portion of the headstall or halter; also, secured near opposite ends of the bit-bar 10 are the side plates 16 16, outside of which are placed the side holders 17 17, formed in the shape shown in the drawings from spring metal and adapted to grasp of the bar of the bit between their spring ends whilethe looped portion presses against the cheeks of the horse or other animal and tends to hold the bit against lateral motion.

The curved pipe connection shown in Fig. 2 has screw-threads formed on its ends, one of which screws into the threaded opening 13 of the bit-bar, the other threaded end being secured in a threaded opening in the base of the pill or powder cup or holder, Fig. 3, or in that of the sprayer, Fig. 8. The flushing-pipe, Fig. 6, is also adapted to be secured in the opening 13 by means of its threaded end.

The injectorpipe (shown in Fig. 5) is adapted to be secured in the opening 13 and is furnished with a stop-plate 18.

The forcing device (illustrated in Fig. 7) may consist of a bulb 19, provided with a short piece of rubber pipe 20, adapted to be secured to the tapering end of the bit, and this bulb may contain the liquid medicine, or the medicine may be contained in a pail or other suitable receptacle and conveyed to the bulb 19 through the tube 21, secured at one end to the bulb and provided with a valve, if necessary. The screw-plug 11 may extend into the longitudinal perforation of the bit-bar nearly to the opening 13, if desired.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent contain medicine or to direct the flow thereof,

removably secured to said bit bar, as described. v

2. The combination, with a medicine-bit, of the hooked side holders 17, adapted to hold the bit from lateral movement, as described.

3. The c0mbination,with the longitudinallyperforated bit-bar 10, provided with the screwplug 11, closing one end of said perforation and having the threaded opening 13, the tapering end 12, and a compressible bulb secured thereto, of devices, as herein described, for containing or directing the flowof the medicine, adapted to be interchangeably secured in said perforation 13, as and for the purpose described.
