UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
JOSEPH T. RICHMOND, OF CALDXVELL, KANSAS.
PORTABLE SHED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,314, dated January 19, 1892. Application filed July 2, 1891. Serial No. 398,274. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH T. RICHMOND,L citizen of the United States of America, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Sheds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable and adjustable sheds.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved shed which maybe used for numerous purposes; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and. particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one-half of the roof removed, but indicated in position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the parts arranged as a cattle-shed.
A A designate the four corner-posts, which may be suitably buried in the ground and braced to each other at their upper ends by strips CtCt. Each corner-post is provided with racks b b, which are secured on opposite sides thereof and the teeth of which project upward. Between the end posts are planted short uprights B B, which are provided with perforations Z) and b, as shown,the perforations I)" being adapted to receive pins or rods to maintain the roof in a vertical position when so placed, two of the corner-posts being perforated on a line with the perforation b in the uprights to receive rods 0 c.
The sections D D of the roof consist of frames made up of end pieces (Z d, braced by the strips 6 e, over which the covering-boards are secured. Between the two intermediate strips e e are secured cross-pieces f f, through which pass the supporting-rods g g, the ends of which pass through the end pieces (Z and play in slots g formed therein. These rods engage with the racks b b on the corner-posts and sustain the weight of the roof-sections.
Upon the rods g g, which pass through the slots 9', are secured rods M, which depend therefrom. When it is desired to raise one of the sections of the roof, one of the rods'iis pushed upward to elevate the rod g, to which it is attached,and cause it toengage with the rack-tooth above the one in which it rests, and the other rods,being manipulated in the same manner, raise the section step by step,
or by reversing the operation it can be lowered. The end pieces of the sections arealso provided with brace-pieces 70 7a, which are pivotally attached thereon, and by properly securing the lower ends of the brace-pieces 7c 7.;
to the corner-posts by means of pins which pass through perforations in the bracepieces and enter perforations 7c" in the post, the inclination of the sections can be varied, a series 70 of perforations being formed in the cornerposts for such adjustment. To adj nst one of the roof-sections vertically, the brace-pieces 7;
k are disengaged from the pins that hold them to the corner-posts, and the rods 2' 2', having the hooked ends, are crossed and caused to engage with the pins which pivot the brace-pieces to the end pieces (Z d. Now, by alternately pulling and pushing upon the brace-pieces 7t 7a, which hang down, the supporting-rods g g may be brought alternately in contact with the rack-bars b to raise or lower the roof.
The structure hereinbefore described can be used as a hay rack or shed. Should it be desired to arrange the parts for use as a cattle-shed with a closed back, one of the sections can be lowered and maintained in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the opposite section secured in a vertical position to the center posts B B. A shed thus con- 0 strncted can be easily taken down and transported, and may be adjusted to several differ-. ent positions than those shown in the accompanying drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I g5 claim- 1. In combination with the corner-posts A A, having rack-bars b b,a roof-section having rods for engagement with said racks, and brace-pieces, as k k, which are secured to the I00 roof-section, and corner-posts for maintaining said section at the desired inclination, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the corner-postshaving rack-bars, as shown, a roof-section D, having end pieces (1 d, with slots through which pass the supporting-rods, rods if for manipulating said supporting-rods to raise or lower 5 the section, and braces connecting the outer ends of the section to the posts, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the posts or supports A A, having rack-bars b b and a vertical series of perforations, the roof-sections D D, having rods which engage with the rackplates on the posts, and braces 75 is, pivotally attached to the ends of the roof-sections and having perforations at their lower ends through which pins pass engaging with the posts, substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with the adjustable roofseotions D D and supporting-posts, constructed substantially as shown, the intermediate uprights B B, having perforations, and means for securing one of the roof-sections in a vertical position thereto, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with the posts or supports A A, having rack-bars b b, supportingrods 9 g, secured to the roof and passed through slots in the side pieces thereof, braces 70 k, and rods ii,held in engagement with the rods g g and adapted to be connected with the pins which pivotally secure the bracepieees to the roof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OSEPII T. RICHMOND.
