Description.A
As seen in the drawings, the crib struc` ture has side bars 12, formed as shown best lin Fig. (l, from angle iron. The inner l unirsusraras rar-snr Ycaricia.
1 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV, 26, 1918, elimination mea July 5, 1ers. f seriaiiv. 243,398.
the innermost thereof serve as stop members when engaged by the hook ends 16 formed at'the extremities of the extensions 13. Normally or when the structure isbeing used as a crib, the rack is pushed in to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. Here `the cross bar 141 is disposed in juxtaposed relation to the hinge bar 17 to which the rails 18 of the foot board are rigidly at- 'tached At the upper extremity of the rails 18, is secured the hand rail 19 of the foot board.
i As seen best in Fig. 5l of the drawings, the
extremities ofthe hand rail 19 -are formed lto provide inclined walls 20 which correspond with inclined surfaces at the extremities of the bed posts 21. Attached to the hand rail 19 and at the extremities thereof, are spring latches 22, each of which is provided with a spring extension 23, that causes it to engage the inner side ot the post 21 with which it is associated, for holding the rail in fixed relation to the post when the foot board is raised to conform with the crib construction.
The crib is provided with side members each having a hand rail 24, a lower rail 25, and a plurality of spindles 26, which structurally connects the said rails. The side members are slidably mounted on guide rods 27, the rails 2l and 25 having at the extremities thereof, sliding eyeleted members 2S and 29, which intold the said rods 27, as seen lbest in Figs. l and 7 of the drawings. As shown in Fig. 7, the rails 24 are recessed adjacent the eyelet formed in the member 28, to house a clamping latch 30. The latch 30 has a pivot 31, a trigger handle 32, and a seating spring 33, which normally rocks the latches 30 to grip the rods 2 7 clamping the same to support the side members in any adjusted relation to said rods. This adjustment is particularly desired when using the structure as a crib, and when'as at night the mother may desire to lower the side of the crib next to her bed. At other times, it is desired to lower the side members partially to prevent ,a growing child from rolling out the bed. When the bed is occupied by an adult, the sides may be lowered completely. Also by lowering the sides of the structure, the operation of making the bed is facilitated.
Whenever it is desired to convert the crib for use as a Single bed, this is accomplished by lowering the side members in the manner described, the person operating the bed engaging to this end the trigger handles 32 to' hold the latches from engaging the rods 27. This operation is facilitated by slightly raising` 'the side member being adjusted, the latches 30 yielding; quickly to a movement inthe reverse direction.v
When the side members have been lowered, the operator engages the cross bar 14 and draws the rack out to its full extent or until the hooks 16 at the extremities of the extensions 13 engage the inner clips 15. The latches are then raised out of engagement with the bed posts 2l, and the foot board is swung on its hinge bars 17 to the lowered position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Generally, if the structure has been employed as a crib, a short length mattress section is employed in conjunction with the crib members, the added section being disposed on the foot board and on the rails 18 thereof. The bed is new in position to be made up as a single bed for use by an adult.
A bed comprising a frame having bed posts at the corners thereof; side bars com necting said posts, said side bars being con structed from angle iron to form housings; a foot board pivotally mounted between said posts at the foot of said bed; a rack slidably mounted in said frame and, in juxtaposed relation to the side bars, said rackbeing' extensible from the foot of said bed to support the foot board when disposed approximately in a horizontal position; clips supporting said rack in structural relation to said side bars; and means for locking said foot board in vertical position.
