SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,803, dated January 12, 1892.

Be it known that I, MAX SOHODSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoe or Analogous Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention, which consists of a fastening device or buckle for shoes, &c., is designed, principally, for use on over-shoes, though it may be advantageously employed in many other connections, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which similar reference-numerals designate like or equivalent parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 represents the front of the upper part of a shoe provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section thereof; Eig. 3, a transverse section on the line a: as of Fig. 2, and Figs. i and 5 represent the separate parts of my improved buckle or fastener.

Referringto the drawings,it willbe seen that my fastener or buckle consists of two separate parts, one of which (designated by the numeral 1) is shown in Fig. 4, and the other (designated by' the numeral 2) is shown in Fig. 5. These separate parts or sections are composed of any desired material, preferably of metal, and are designed to be attached one on each of the opposite fronts of the shoe, as shown in Figs. land 2. They may be attached in any desired manner, but, as shown in the drawings, are provided with brads or sharp projections 3, which are forced through the material of the" shoe, and then turned and looked, as shown in Fig. 2, in a manner well known.

The part or section 1 of the buckle or fastener is provided with inwardly and backwardly extending projections or tongues 4, cut or stamped from the body of the section in such manner as to leave perforations therein, and the part 2 is provided with similar projections and perforations, the projections or tongues 5, however, in this part 2, extending outwardly and backwardly in the opposite direction from the projections or tongues 4 on the part 1. One of these parts or sections, preferably part 1, is provided with inwardly-extending flanges 6, which inclose part 2 at the sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 3,. and aid in stiffening and giving strength to the device, and it is evident that these flanges may be placed on either of the parts or sec tions, or on both, without departing from the scope of my invention. I prefer to form two of the projections 5 on part 2 of the buckle or fastener and three or more of the tongues 0r projections 4: on'part 1, in order that the fastening may be tightened or loosened, as

may be desired, although it is evident that the number of these parts may be regulated at will.

The operation of my improved fastening device or buckle is as follows: The separate sections being secured to the opposite adjacent fronts or flaps ofthe shoe the parts 1 and 2 are brought together and each pressed forward and together till the projections 4 and 5 pass into the corresponding perforationsin each of the sectionsl and 2, and interlock as shown in Fig. 2, in which position they will securely remain till it is desired to release them, when by repeating the described operation, or by pressing the separate parts or fronts of the shoe together, the projections t and 5 release themselves from the interlocked position referred to. The same result may also be accomplished by holding that part of the shoe to which the section 2 of the buckle or fastener is attached from slipping and taking hold of the projection 7 on the part 1 and pulling it forward over the part 2, and pressing downward until the projections or tongues 4 and 5 enter the corresponding holes in the parts 1 and 2 and interlock, as before described.

Having now fully illustrated and described my invention, its construction, and operation, what I .claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
