(No Model.) v
0. K. NEWELL; NURSING BOTTLE.
No. 466,361. Patented Jan. 5, 1892.
UNITED STAT-ES PATE T OFFICE.
OTIS K. NEWELL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NURSING-BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent, No. 466,361, dated January 5, 1892;
- Application filed October 23,1891. $erial No. 409.592. (No model.)
I companying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relatesto vented nursingbottles, and has for its object to provide the same with a more efficient covering for the bottle.
My present invention has for its object to provide a vented nursing-bottle with a covering for the vent, which is firmly secured on the bottle and maybe moved to uncover the vent without becoming detached from the bottle.
In accordance with my invention the ventcovering is composed of a yokeor annular ring encircling the neck of the bottle, and a v band secured to or forming part of the said yoke and passed under the bottom of the bottle. 7
. The nursing-bottle is preferably made substantially pear-shaped, so that when laid on its side, as when the baby is nursing lying down, the mouth of the bottle'is thrown toward the mouth of the baby rather than away from it.
The particular features of my invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a vented nursin g-bottle embodying my invention, the bottle being shown in its upright position. Fig. 2 represents the nursing-bottle shown in Fig. 1 as laid upon its side; Fig. 3, a detail of the vent-covering preferred by me; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the nursing-bottle provided with a modified form of covering.
shaped, as herein shown, and also preferably The nursing-bottle A, preferably made pear- I I composed of 'anneale'd glass, is provided near 5 5 its bottom with a vent-opening a. The bottle A is provided with my improved form of ventcovering, preferably made in the shape shown in Fig. 3, it consisting of an annular band a,
provided with an enlargement for a portion of its length, as at a the latter being provided with a slit a through which the neck of the bottle is inserted when the band is fitted to the bottle. The slitted enlargement a when separated, as when fitted uponthe bottle, forms a yoke composed of two mem= bers 2 3, united by the band a, which is passed down the length of the bottle and under the bottom of the same, the band a, when in position, normally covering the vent a. The rubber band is enlarged, as at 00 so'that when slitted the members 2 3 will be of submyself in this respect, as it"is evident the main portion of the band a may be made 80 separated from the yoke portion, as shown in Fig. 4:, the said yoke being shown in the said figure as an annular ring I), provided with lugs or ears I), to which the ends of the band a may be secured in any suitable or desired manneras, for instance, by inserting the ,ears or lugs I) through suitable openings in the ends of the band. I prefer to make the nursing-bottle Apear-shaped,as herein shown,
so that when the bottle is laid upon its side,
a normallycovers the vent-opening a; butzlco when it is desired to vent the bottle the band a may be pushed aside by the finger, so as to uncover the vent a, and care need not be exercised as to the amount to which the band a is moved from the vent, as the said band may be removed entirely from under the bottle, but will be retained on the bottle by means of the yoke encircling the neck of the bottle. In this manner the Vent covering band is retained on the bottle and liability of misplacing and losing the same is avoided.
By reason of the pear shape of the bottle the vent a, when the bottle is in position for nursing, is at the highest point, thereby avoiding leakage.
I claim' 1. The combination, with a nursing-bottle provided with a vent-opening, of a vent-covering consisting of a yoke encircling the neck of the bottle, and a band a, passed under the bottom of the lgottle to normally cover the vent therein, su stantiaily as described.
2. The combination, with a nursing-bottle provided with a vent-opening a, of a ventcovering consisting of a band a, passing under the bottom of the bottle, and ayoke integral with the band and fitted upon the neck of the bottle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of -two subscribing witnesses.
OT-IS K. NElVELL.
