NITED STATES' PATE-wrA OFFICE.
AUGUST WM. SCHEUBER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO SIMON ZINN, OF
f NEW YORK, N. Y.
FRAME FOR POCKET-BOOKS OR OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,262, dated December 29, 1891.
l Application led .August 25, 1891. Serial No. 403,713. (No model.)
. purses, bags, reticules, and the like; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following speciication and claims, and illustratedin the accompanyr ing drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the frame-cover closed. Fig. 2 showsv the cover open. Fig. 3 shows the frame open. Fig. 4is a section along fr, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a 2o modification. Fig. 6 shows the frame of Fig. 5 partly open. Fig. 7 -is a section along y y, Fig. 5.
In the drawings, the letters A B indicate two jaws.l rIhe links or arms CC are jointed or pivoted at D D tothe jaw A, and the links or arms E E are jointed or pivoted at F F to the jaw B. The links C E are jointed or pivoted to one another at G G.
When the frame is closed, it is held shut 3o by a lock or clasp consisting of a cover-plate M, hinged through the medium of a pivotpin lN to the jaw A and having an eye II to engage aknob or stud I on the jaw B. The cover-plate M serves to close the pocketbook and to cover and conceal the jointed links C and E. The cover-plate may be retained in engagement with the stud I by means of a latch K, pivoted to the coverplate by a pivot-pin L and adapted to be 4o swung under the head of the knob or stud I, -ias indicated in Fig. 1. If desired, however, the eye I-I can be constructed to snap into engagement with the knob or stud I, as indicated in Fig. 7, in which case the latch K The cover-plate effectually excludes dustor other foreign matter from entering between the two jaws and also prevents the contents of the bagor pursesuch, for example, as coins-from slipping out 5o between thejaws.
The frame can of course be made of any suitable size, according as it is to be used either ona smaller or larger purse or on bags of various sizes. As the links C E enable the jaws A B to open wide or separate acon- 5 siderable distance, the contents of the bag or purse can be readily inspected, when desired, and the particular contents required can be selected without its being necessary to empty the purse Or bag.v 6
The purse or bagO is made of any suitable material--such as leather, cloth, or other substance-and is secured to the frame in any suitable well-known way, such as by clamping the edges of the purse or bag in the deending 'aws or flanges P. The de ressions b J b or eyes Q in the cover M accommodate the joints or pivots D F when the cover is closed so that the cover can set down close on the frame.v When theframe is closed, it occu- 7- ,pies but small compass, so that it Vcan easily be carried in the hand or pocket or on the person, and when closed the frame presents a neat appearance. The cover can be ornamented in any suitable way to suit the taste. As the jaws A B open parallel, such articles as bank-bills are not so liable to fall out of said jaws, as in the case of frames where the jaws open or swing downward.
When the frame is to be opened to its full Sc extent, the jaws A B are separated Auntil the links C E are in alignment, after which the pivots Gr are pushed outward past the deadcenter, so as to prevent the jaws closing by accident, and also allowing the ngers to make 8 5 a wide reach between the jawsA B when taking an object from the purse or bag.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A frame for pocket-books and other ar- 9o ticles, consisting of a pair of jaws, the pairs of links jointed together, pivoted, respectively, to the two jaws and collapsible in ahorizontal plane toward each other', and a cover-plate hinged to one of the jaws and having means 9 5 to engage a part of the other jaw for covering the jointed links and closing the pocket-book, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the jawsAandB and the purse or bag O, secured thereto, of the roc pairs of links E, jointed together, pivoted, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set respectively, to the two jaws sind collapsible my hand in the presence 0'1": two subscribing 1o in n horizontal plane toward each other, and Witnesses. :i cover- Jlate M, hinged to one of the 'ews and f T A 5 having m eye H to engage a knob oil stud on AUGUS l M' SCUEULER' the other jaw for covering the jointed links Witnesses: and closing the pocket-book, substantially as WM. C. IIAUFF, described. E. F. KASTENHUBER.
