SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,084, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed April 24, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV SOHOCK, a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Barrel-Washer, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, partly in elevation, of my improved barrel-washer. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a detail and top view, on an enlarged scale, of the washer-plate used in my apparatus; and Fig. 5 is a detail top view of the bearing-surfaces beneath the washer.
This invention relates to certain improvements on the barrel-washers described in Letters Patent No. 173,422, and in reissued Letters Patent No. 9,259, of June 15, 1880, both granted to me.
The present improvement dispenses with the vertical displacement of the barrel-support in the act of opening and closing the water-supply to the washing-nozzle; and it consists of the details of improvements and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the water-supply pipe, the same being placed longitudinally in bearings B B, that are supported either on a suitable lower frame or, by preference, in a trough O, that rests on rollers D, so that it can be moved from place to place conveniently. The trough O is provided with one or more suitable outlets a for discharging from it any water which it may contain, and the water-supply pipe A is shown to be provided with a faucet b fordischarging water directly into the trough for washing it out or other purposes; but this faucet b is not always necessary.
Each of the brackets Bis intended to carry one of my improved barrel-washers. The central top upper portion of each bracket forms a cylindrical socket or chamber cl, whose flat lower surface communicates by an aperture e (shown by dotted lines in Fig. l) with the interior 0f the pipe A. Upon the said flat lower surface of the chamber (1 is placed a perforated plate f, (shown in Fig. 5,) which has Serial No. 390,230. (No model.)
the aperture 6. Upon this plate f is placed a washer-plate h, of leather or the like, having apertures 'i, that communicate at all times with the apertures g. The plates f h are held in position so that they cannot be revolved by means of screws j, the heads of which are sunk into the washer-plate h, as indicated in Fig. 1. Into the chamber (1 enters the cylindrical lower portion Z of the barrelsupport E, said cylindrical lower portion being hollow and havinga flat lower end or partition m, that rests on top of the washer-plate h. In this partition m are two holes, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) that are located, as the holes 2' are, in the washer-plate h, and that communicate with these holes t when the barrel is to be washed, so as to let water flow from the pipe A directly into the cylinder Z, and thence upward into the nozzle-pipe a, that is screwed into the top of the cylinder Z; but when the barrel-support is given a quarter-turn on the axis of its central cylinder Z the holes in the plate m are carried out of alignment with the holes 2', and all further supply of water to the nozzle 11 is thereby shut off. A bottom view of the plate m would look exactly like Fig. 4 without the screws The cylindrical lower part lot the barrel-support is made in one piece or otherwise rigidly connected with outwardly-extending brackets 0 o,which constitute the barrel-support proper, all as clearly indicated in the drawings. The lower plate at on the cylinder l has a diameter greater than the cylinder Z, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will fairly fit within the inner circumference of the chamber d; but in order to prevent water leaking and escaping around the outer side of the cylinder Z packing p is placed between the cylinder 1 and the inner walls of'the socket 01 above the projecting portion of the plate m, as shown, and finally this packing is held down by a gland F, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is made in two parts and fastened by screws q to the flange of the socket (1. cylinder 1 is prevented.
The barrel-support E is provided with one or more downwardly-projecting pins 7', (see Figs. 1 and 3,) which strike against shoulders s of the gland F, when the holes of the plate Thus leakage of water around the m are in alignincntwith the holes '11, and which strike against-shoulderst of the gland 1 when the holes of the plate on are out of alignment with the holes 2'. In operation the barrel-support is turned to bring the pins 0 against the shoulders tbefore a barrel is put in position. A barrel is then placed upon the brackets 0 so that the nozzle it enters the bung-hole, and thereupon the barrel-support, together with the barrel which it carries, is given a quarter-turn, so as to carry the pins 1' against the shoulders 8, thereby openih g the water-supply to the barrel and causing the same to be thoroughly washed. Any water escaping from the barrel flows into the trough O, and can be discharged therefrom from time to time through the outlets a.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination of the supporting-frame B and the water supply pipe A, connected therewith, said supporting-frame 13 having the Water-discharge opening e and the upwardly-extending chamber d, with the perforated plate f, having holes g communicating with the aperture 6, washer h, having holes 11 communicating with the holes g,- said plates fand It being held in place by screws, as described, and with the barrel-support E, havin g downwardly-cxtending cylinder l and upwardly-extending nozzle 7, the lower end of the cylinderl having openings that are adapted to be placed in and out of communication with the apertures i, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the lower frame 15, having socket (Z and shoulders s t, with the barrel-support proper E, having brackets 0, nozzle 72, stop-pins r, and Water-receivingcyl; inder I, and With means for opening and shutting oit the supply of water to the nozzle, suh stantially as specified.
3. The combination of thelower frame 13, water-supply pipe A, socket d, barrel-support E, having nozzle n, and water-receiving cylinder Z, and means, substantially as described, for lettingwater into and shutting it off from said cylinder Z, with the packingp and gland F, all substantially as herein shown and de scribed.
