LOUIS M. HOOPER, OF RUTHERFORD, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. L. HOTT IRON VORKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. l
SPRAY-BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,439, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed May 8, 1895. Serial No. 548,533. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern:
Beit known that I, Louis M. Hoornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Spray-Baths, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of baths in which there are perforated pipes for sprayio ing the person receiving the bath. The water can be turned onto the spray or needle-jets or from the shower, so that numerous small jets of water run down the person, or it may come from a central pipe or douche that sup- I 5 plies a large volume of water vertically upon the person; or the water maycome from roses or iinely-perforated nozzles, usually known as the liver-spray, or the water may be directed upwardly from a bidet-bath.
The present improvements relate to .the peculiar combination of devices whereby the apparatus is simplified in construction and lessened in expense, and it is more easily managed than the devices heretofore employed, because the cocks and connections are easy of access to either the attendant or to the person taking the bath.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the general character of the 3o apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section through the pipes and connections to the respective valves. Fig. 3 is a section of the tubular connection i'or the bidet. Fig. i is a vertical section representing the devices for connect- 3 5 ing the needle-spray tubes with the hori- Zontal tubes. Figs. 5 and 6 represent the wedge that is made use of at the upper connection for such needle-spray tubes, and Fig. 7 is a section in larger size of the shower- 4o bath head and douche.
The hot-water-supply pipe at A and the cold-water-supply pipe at B are connected together through the cocks or valves O and D with the vertical mixing-column E, from which pass off laterally the pipes G, H, I, K, and L, each pipe being provided with a cook connecting it with the mixing-column, and by which the water of the desired temperature is allowed to pass through one or more 5o of these branch pipes.
The combination-bath apparatus is usually placed in a recess, in which M represents the back wall, and N N side walls, and the vertical columns O, O, and O2 are supported by collars upon the floor P and bybracket-arms at Q, and the upper part of the pipe O is connected with and opens into .the shower R, and the upper end of the pipe O2 is connected with and opens into the douche or single-jet pipe S. There are segmental or horizontal pipes T, T', and T2 extending around between the pipes O, O', and O2 and connected at their ends by globular couplings a, as illustrated in Fig. l, and the needle-spray tubes U stand vertically and are supported from the segmental tubes T and T2, and upon the tube T' are the rose or liver spray projections V.
A combination-bath arrangement approximating the devices thus far described will be found in Letters Patent- No. 335,785, and the special features of the present invention relate to the peculiar connections of the respective pipes as next'described, whereby the parts are rendered more simple and easier to construct than the baths of this character heretofore made.
Upon reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the pipe or column O is stopped off just below the inlet-pipe K, and hence the water admitted through the pipe K from the mixing-chamber E passes up the upper portion of the column or pipe O into the shower R.
The water admitted by the pipe and cock L passes into one of the globular connections o. and around the pipe or column O and along by the upper segmental pipe T2 to the upper part of the column O2 and hence to the douche S, there being an angular elbow, as illustrated in the diagram Fig. 2, between one portion of the pipe T2 and the upper part of the pipe O2.
The water admitted by the pipe and cock I passes into the column O and by the lower segmental pipe T to the column O2 and to the column O, and it also passes to the spraypipes U U, as illustrated in this diagram Fig. 2, there being perforations represented in the pipes O, O, and O2` between the segmental pipes T and T2. It is, however, to be understood that in Fig. 2 the connections between the segmental pipe T and the spray-tubes U are only diagrammatic and that the specific connection is hereinafter described.
Vhen the roses or liver-sprays V are made use of, the water is turned on t-hrough the pipe II and passes into one of the globular connections a around the pipe O and by the segmental pipe T' to such liver-spray V.
In order to properly support and connect the vertical spray-tubes 'U with the respective segmental or horizontal tubes T and T2, I make upon each spray-tube V a branch connection 10 and a union 11, connecting the same with a branch 12 from the pipe T, so that water passing through such pipe T, as before indicated, will also pass into the vertical spray-pipes U and issue in small jets through the holes therein, and for supporting the upper portion of each spray-tube U, I provide a stud or arm 14 for each of such spraytubes U, the'same projecting from the pipe T2, and in the outer surface of each arm 14: is a dovetailed recess adapted to receive a dovetailed block 15, that is soldered or otherwise fastened upon the back of the pipe U, so that as the pipe U is applied in its place the block 15 is pressed up into the recess in VVAthe arm 14 and the ends of the branches 10 and 12 are brought together and the screwunion 11 employed to connect the parts, and
I find it advantageous to place the block 15 at a slight inclination, as illustrated in Fig. 6, so that the block may be caused to bind in its dovetailed recess. If the pipe is passed upwardly into its position at a slightinclination and then brought vertical as the union is screwed up, such block will bind iirmly in its recess. By this arrangement the needlesprays, the liver-sprays, the shower, or the douche can be directed upon the person taking the bath either simultaneously or separately, so that the water runs down the person, and the bidet attachment W is upon an arm 18, extending out from the vertical pipe 19, which vertical pipe is free to be turned in the supports 20, that extend out from the column O, and at the upper end is a connection from the pipe 19 to the branch pipe G, as illustrated in larger size in Fig. 3, the upper end of the pipe 19 being formed as a plug similar to an ordinary cock and the pipe 19 being provided with a handle 22, so that the pipe 19 can be turned by the handle 22 and the bidet attachment WV swung out over the center of the floor of the bath, so that a jet or jets of water can be employed from the bidet to act upwardly in washing the person, and when swung back into the position shown in Fig. l the supply of water may be cut off by the plug in the upper end of the pipe 19 even without actuating the valve to the branch pipe G.
In cases where it is desired to :regulate the admission of water to the bidet the valve in the pipe G may alone be employed, in which instance the plug at the upper end of the pipe 19 will be made, as shown, with a groove around it, so that the movement of the plug in the ball at. the end of the pipe G willnot open or close the water passage-way.
Instances sometimes arise where the perforations in the shower-bath R become obstructed, and it is difficult to clean thehollow head forming the shower-bath. To allow for the removal of the shower-bath head, in. which are the numerous perforations, I provide a screw-threaded hub s, adapted to fit a screwthreaded opening in the upper part of the case of the shower, so that the case and the perforated plate forming the shower-bath can be unscrewed from the hub orsupport s for cleaning or for repairs, and in cases where the douche S is made use of it is advantageous to provide a removable nipple t' at the lower end of the douche-pipe screwed into the lower part of such douche-pi pe above the perforated plate of the shower, so that by unscrewing this nipple the shower-bath head can be removed by unscrewing the same from the hub s.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with needle-spray tubes and roses and the shower and douche, of the tubular column O with an internal stop and branch pipes I and K above and below the stop and the pipes to the needle-spray tubes and the shower respectively, the branch pipe L and the globular connection around the column and the pipe to the douche, and the branch pipe I-I and globular connection to the spray-roses, substantially as set forth.
2. A rose-nozzle consisting` of a lower perforated part and an upper part which expands downwardly these two parts being detachably connected for convenience in cleansing the interior, substantially as specified.
The combination with the horizontal pipes and the vertical needle-spray tubes, of branch pipes and unions for connecting the needle-spray tubes to the supply water-pipe, and dovetailed blocks and recesses for supporting the needle-spray tubes to the other horizontal pipe, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the horizontal pipes and the vertical needle-spray tubes, of branch pipes and unions for connecting the needle-spray tubes to the water-supply pipe, and blocks received into recesses upon supporting-arms for holding such needle-spray tubes, such blocks being at an inclination so as to bind in their recesses when the needlespray tubes are brought into vertical position for coupling to the water-supply pipe, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this (3th day of May, 1895.
L. M. HOOPER.
