ATTACHMENT FOR WATER-SUPPLY PIPES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF F. SCHOTT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Water-Supply Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to a water saving or economizing attachment for use in connection with the discharge nozzles of water supply pipes for use in hotels, restaurants and households, the object thereof being to economize the water consumption in accordance as to the water quantity desired for use at different periods or times of the day. For instance, in connection with the pantry or kitchen supply nozzles when water is drawn for the washing of certain dishes, a spray stream is preferable tothe heavy solid stream usually permitted to flow from said nozzle and where a spray stream is utilized there is less consumption of water than where a solid stream is permitted to discharge. The present invention, therefore, contemplates the form of an attachment whereby the water user may at will permit the outflow of a spray stream delivery from the discharge nozzle or a solid stream therefrom, dependent upon the will of the user of the water. By this means the water consumption may be properly proportioned to the use to which the waten is to be placed, thereby creating a material saving in the excess-water which at present is permitted to run waste, which isa very important and essential factor to be taken into consideration where water is charged for by meter readings and in such territory where the water supply is of limwherein a somewhat heavy charge is made per thousand feet of water consumption.
The hereinafter described invention is one which will appeal to the householder and equally so to the managers of hotels, restaurants and cafes, etc., -or such. establishments wherein a large monthly consumption of water is made, permitting, as it does, a material saving in water to be made and consequently a material saving in the monthly water bill.

Figure l is a sectional elevation illustratmg the invention as applied to the nozzle of an ordinary valve controlling water supply nozzle, illustrating the controlling valve of the attachment in position for directing the dlscharge of water into a sprinkler head or rose carried by the attachment.
Fig. 2 is a broken detailed view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the controlling valve of the attachment turned to close the flow of water into the sprinkler head or rose, and to direct the same as a solid stream through the outlet stem thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 3+3 of Fig. 1 of the drawings and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 8 taken on 2 is divided by means of the central partition piece or diaphragm 4c, and within the barrel above the partition l is seated a 1'0- tatable plug valve 5. The said rotatable valve 5 is provided in the bottom wall thereof with a plurality of vertically disposed outlet ports 8. The lateral ports 6 in the rotatable valve 5 are adapted to be moved into registry with the lateral ports 9 formed in the vertical wall of the barrel 2, while the vertical ports 8 are adapted to be moved into registry with the vertical discharge ports 10, formed in the central partition piece or diaphragm & of the barrel 2. Within the plug valve 5 is fitted a basket strainer 11. which is designed for the purpose of preventing foreign substances passing through the ports 6 of the said valve 5 and the ports 9 of the barrel 2 when the ports are in registry.
In the present case, the barrel 2 is illustrated as having formed integral therewith a sprinkler head or rose 12, into which the I water discharging through the lateral ports 6 and 9 respectively finds its outlet through the perforated bottom 13 thereof, and which discharges therefrom in a spray-like form, or the water stream discharging from the strainer head or rose 12 is broken up into a head or 'rose by means of the spriligheld handle 14', thestem" 14" of which works through a slotted section15' of the depend: ing rim 15' ofthe sprinkler header rose 12', the inner end'of said stem 14' being corinected by post" 16 to the bottom ofjthe valve 5, said post extending" through'an apert'ur'e' in f the central diaphragm" or bridge '41 of the barrel 2. 2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a cylindrical open ended barrel, a diaphragm extending transversely of said barrel and dividing the same into two compartments, a cup shaped plug valve rotatably mounted within said upper compartment and provided in its side and bottom walls with suitable outlet port-s, said upper compartment provided in its side wall and in said diaphragm with outlet ports adapted for registering with the respective cooperating ports of said valve, a sprinkler head surrounding said barrel above the lower end thereof, and communicating with the outlet ports in the side wall of said upper chamber, and means cooperating with said valve and capable of movement to operate the same to position the ports thereof in register with their respective cooperating ports of said upper chamber.
