Description

W. H. ZINN.
PORTABLEFOUNTAIN.
Patented June 5 1877.
to weighted head I; of receptacle D, and coni v I A PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ZINN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FOUNTAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,557,
dated J nne 5, 1877; application filed November 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ZINN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Portable Fountain, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to an improved portable fountain, constructed of pottery, in combination with a metallic basin, the pottery to be ornamented in any suitable manner, and interiorly constructed and arranged as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my improved portable fountain. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a- :0, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents a stand, to be made of pottery, and exteriorly ornamented with figures or otherwise. The stand A extends at its upper end, as shown in the drawings, in the form of a basin, B, in which rests the metallic basin Gin the present instance made of brass, although it can be made of any suitable metal. D, a receptacle, made of flexible material, such asleather, india-rubber, &c., or any flexible material impervious to water or the liquid to be used in the operation of the fountain b and 0, two head boards, one, b, of which is weighted in any suitable manner. This receptacle is placed within the chamber E of the stand A, with its head board a down, and the weighted head-board b free to raise and lower; d, a pipe leading from basin 0 down through the chamber E of the stand- A, and entering the receptacle D through the lower head a; f, a valve in pipe 01, arranged to open to'the receptacle D, so as to admit water to the receptacle from the basin 0, but to close its escape from the receptacle through the pipe 01,- g, a nozzle in the center of basin U, and h a pipe connecting said nozzle 9 with the insideof receptacle D, which it enters through the lower head 0; l, a cord or line, which is fastened nected to a horizontal shaft, m, which turns in suitable bearings, at n n, on the pipes at and h. This shaft m projects to the outside of the stand A, as at o, and is there adapted to receive a key or handle, so that it may be turned to raise the weighted head 12 of the receptacle. The receptacle D, through its head 0 and pipes at and h, is properly secured to the metallic basin 0.
If water be poured into the basin 0 it flows through the'pipe (1 into the receptacle D, thus enabling said receptacle to be filled by raising the weighted head b, which head, as it falls, drives the water out of the receptacle through the nozzle, and secures the play of the fountain, from which the water, falling into the basin D, is again brought back into the receptacle and used again as before.
To prevent injury to the pottery by leakage from the receptacle D or the pipes at and It, &c., the whole is surrounded in the chamber D of the stand A by a tin casing, F.
The basin 0 being of metal is preferable to one of pottery, as in such the water will not become stagnated so quickly, also is not so liable to leak, can be the better and more securely attached to the pipes d and h, and is not so easily broken.
This portable fountain can be manufactured at a small cost, is very compact, simple in construction, and easily operated.
The tin casing can be dispensed with, although it is preferable to use it for the purpose specified.
The upper portion B of the stand A can also be dispensed with, although for finish and appearance it is preferable to have it, as well as for a support of the metallic basin 0, and the stand can be made of lava, stoneware, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 13 The stand A formed with the basin B, in combination with the metallic basin U, arranged in said basin B, as and for the object set forth.
2. The combination of the stand A, formed with the basin B, the basin 0 arranged in the same, the flexible receptacle D, the pipes d and h in the receptacle, and the heads b and c in the upper and lower ends of the flexible receptacle, as and for the purpose described.
