PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. PRATT, OF NILLISTGN, NORTH DAKOTA.
SANITARY DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed March '22, 1918. Serial No. 223,985.
T 0 all to from may concern Be it known that I, PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Villiston, in the county of l Villiams, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and I useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking-Fountains; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drinking fountains. I
'1 he object of the invention is to construct a drinking fountain from which a number of people may drink at one time, and which will furthermore provide accommodations for adults and children without requiring the former to bend or stoop to an u'ncomfortable degree and without causing the latter to either stretch or climb to reach the mouth piece.
lVith the above general object in View, and such others relating to the particular arrangement of parts and details thereof as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
in the drawings:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of a drinking fountain constructed according to my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof,
Fig. is a section on line 33 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing the basin mounted.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a vertical casing which provides a pedestal and tubular housing for the various parts of the invention, and is preferably constructed of two semi-cylin drical separable sections.
Extending vertically through the casing 1 is a stand pipe 2 which feeds water to a compartment or receptacle 3 which closes the top of the casing 1, and provides a reservoir from which water is distributed through to a feed pipe 1 to the several drinking nozzles as will hereinafter appear. The receptacle 3 is preferably a spherical globe which will provide an ornamental and serviceable element. At the entrance of the stand pipe 2 into the receptacle 3 is a valve 5 which is controlled by a float. 6 whose function it is to close the valve before the receptacle 3 is entrely filled with water so that a reduction in the water pressure is efiected between that which rises in the stand pipe 2 and that which flows to the several drinking nozzles. lVithin the casing 1 and supported by the pipes 2 and 1 is a sectional structure 7 which provides a series of alternating vertical sections 8 upon opposite sides of the fountain and shelves 9 which traverse the casing 1.
Each of the vertical sections 8 is provided with an elongated slot 10 within which is movably mounted a slide element 11 which provides a support for a drinking nozzle 12 and also a conduit for transmitting water to the nozzle 12 from a flexible tube or pipe 13 which is connected to the feed pipe a behind its respective vertical section 8. Also suspended from the slidable coupling element 11 is a basin 1%, as by a stem 15, the basin 14L underhanging the nozzle 12 so as to catch the waste water therefrom. The lower end of the basin is provided with a discharge nipple to which is attached the flexible con duit 16, the latter having its opposite end directed into the casing 1, so as to discharge the waste water into the latter, whence it finds its way to a drainage pipe at the bottom of the casing.
The slide couplings 11 fit the slots 10 so that there is a slight loose movement which permits the coupling to tip within the slots, and furthermore, the nozzles 12 are of such construction that when the couplings 11 are tipped downwardly by the weight of the nozzles, the nozzles will be positioned to direct the water issuing therefrom into the basins 14. Also, the nozzles carry the shields 17 which are hinged thereto so that they may be turned upwardly when the nozzles are lifted so as to clear the latter to give the drinker convenient access thereto, these shields normally depending over the discharge ends of the nozzles so as to defleet the water to the basin. WVhile the nozzles 12 and the basin 1% may be lifted by means of the shields 17, the basins 14 are also provided with handles 18 which may be employed to lift the movable assemblage into convenient drinking position.
In the construction of the above described fountain, a convenient number of drinking nozzles and accompanying basins are mounted upon the standard, so that a number of persons may be accommodated, the positions of the nozzles providing accommodations for adults and children.
The further adjustment permitted by the side wall relation of the nozzles in the sections 8 provides an arrangement whereby a person may lift a fountain nozzle into favorable drinking position where the arrangement does not naturally provide one.
The nozzles 12 maybe of any type required by different institutions or city governments while still permitting the appa ratus of my invent-ion to perform all of the functions required of it. \Vhile the water I which is supplied to the fountains is received directly from the water supply, so
that it has the usual hi 'h pressure of such supplies, this pressure will be broken down in the traverse of the reservoir 3 to the nozzles, so that persons who drink from the fountain are not splashed or sprayed by the nozzle.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A drinking fountain, comprising in combination, a casing serving as a waste pipe, a feed pipe therein, a plurality of horizontally extending nozzles mounted in the --for vertical tilting movement therein, a
casing for vertical sliding movement and basin carried by each nozzle, a flexible connectlon between each nozzle and the feed pipe, and a flexible connection between each basin and the waste pipe.
2. A drinking fountain, comprising in 3 combination, a casing serving as a waste pipe, a feed pipe therein, a plurality of lateral nozzles mounted in the casing to slide vertically and for vertical tilting movement with respect thereto, a plurality 4 of basins also slidable with respect to the casing, flexible connections between the feed and waste pipes and the nozzles and the basins respectively, and shields extending over the discharge ends of the nozzles for 4 normally diverting the waste from the nozzles into the basins, said shields being movable out of such'position to expose the nozzle ends.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
