To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. TEMPLE- TON, citizen of the United States, residing at Roslindale, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement .in Apparatus for Cleansing and Stcrilizing Tumblers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to apparatus forcleansing and sterilizingtumblers and the like.
At soda-water fountains, in barrooms, and the like it is necessary to provide means for cleansing glasses. The requirements of such apparatus are that it may be conveniently positioned, so as not tooccupy much space, that it shall be quickly and easily operated and that it shall not cause discomfort or annoyance or be otherwise objectionable. Tumbler washers as usually constructed are fashioned to receive only one tumbler at a time and are open at the top. Usually, also, the tumbler is held in place by the hand while being washed, for these reasons the use of scalding water or steam in these devices is practically impossible. Not only would the heat be unbearable to the hand,
'but the steam and vapor escaping into the" room would be disagreeable and objectionable. tumblers are merely rinsed in cold water and are not sterilized; the objection to such practice in public drinking establishments is obvious. j
The object of my invention is to provide an inclosed washing'and sterilizing device for tumblers suitable for use ublic drinking establishments and adapte for the use of hot wateror steam.
In accordance with my invention I pro-' vide an inclosing' case a removable tumbler support and means for spraying the ,tum blers when in position in the casing.
The novel features of my invention will be fully described in the following specification-and accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the clanns.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the device illustrated comprises 1 an inclosing casing 1, oppositely disposed spraying devices consisting of spray-nozzles 2, and
sprinkler heads 3, and a glass supporting tray 4. The casing ismade substantially fluid tight and is illustrated as constructed of sheet metal with a rigid head at each end. In the front head I provide an open- 'ing 5 and a vertically sliding door 6 for closing this opening. As a convenient means for operating this door I provide a rack 7 secured to the door and operated by .a pinion 8 engaging. the rack and fast to ashaft 9 rotatable in the brackets 10 secured to the casing. An operating crank 11 is secured to one end of this shaft. As a convenient means of holding the door inopen position I secure a ratchet wheel 12 to the shaft 9 and provide a pawl 13 pivot d to the casing inposition to engage the rate et wheel. An outlet 14 in the bottom'of the casing'is arranged to be connected to the waste pipe.

In the embodiment' of the invention herein illustrated there are four such rectangular portions 80, each. one of which carries a plurality of sprinkler heads 3 and nozzles 2, and these vertical rectangular portions are connected together by pipe connections 81 which provide means for distributing the fluid to the various rectangular portions. The'nozzles may be of any construction which will direct a. spray to the inside of the tumblers. I have illustrated a nozzle consisting of a cap 19 provided. with a plurality of openings 20 screwed on tothe connector 21. The sprinkler heads are preferably so constructed that jets of water will be directed against the bottom and outside'of tumblers. As illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 these heads each consist of a body member in the form of a casting 22 which is larger than the bottom of the tumbler and a face-plate 23 provided with a plurality of outer holes 24 and a central hole 25. The outer holes preferably slant inwardly to direct their jets toward the sides of the tumbler. A plurality of lugs 26 formed in the casting are threaded toreceive screws 27 which secure this face-plate in position. The casting is screw threaded at its upper end to provide means for readily connecting it to the T-coupler.
A tray 4 is provided as a convenient means for supporting the tumblers in position between the spraying devices, and is slidable in ways 28. These ways are secured to the vertical legs of the rectangular portions 80 so that the supply pipes themselves form the support for the tray. I have illustrated this tray as designed to receive a dozen tumblers and accordingly have illustrated a dozen nozzles and a dozen oppositely disposed sprinkler heads. The tray is provided with openings 29 which when the tray is in position in the casing are disposed directly above the nozzles. Openings 30, arranged around the openings 29 facilitate the escape of water. The tumblers are placed upside down upon the tray, one over each of the openings 29. The nozzles thus direct a spray of water or steam to the inside of the tumblers and the sprinkler heads which are positioned above direct sprays of water or steam to the outside, thus simultaneously spraying the inside and outside. By this arrangement the tumblers are si multaneously washed inside and outside and will not be cracked by the sudden application-of hot water or steam. The door 6, in the casing is of sufficient size to permit the passage of the tray with the tumblers mounted thereon. As will be clear from the above description I have provided a cleansing and sterilizing device which is suitable for use at soda-water fountains, in bar rooms, and the like for sterilizing a number of tumblers simultaneously.
The device is so designed that the air of the room will not be filled with escaping steam and vapor and may be employed without giving rise to objections such as follow the use of ordinary open tumbler washers when hot water is applied thereto.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an apparatus for washing and sterilizing tumblers, the combination with.a casing, of a plurality of vertically-disposed rectangularshaped pipe portions situated within the casing and connected together, means to supply a washing and sterilizing fluid to said pipe portions, spraying devices depending from the upper horizontal members of said rectangular portions, nozzles projecting upwardly from the lower horizontal members of said portions, a tray 'to support tumblers to be washed having openings through which the liquid from the nozzles is delivered into tumblers supported on the tray, and means carried by the vertical legs of the rectangular portions to removably sustain said tray.
2. In an apparatus for washing and sterilizing tumblers, the combination with a substantially fluid-tight inclosing casing having a door opening and a door for closing said opening, an inlet pipe leading into said casing, a plurality of vertically-arranged rectangular pipe portions situated within the casing and extending transversely thereof, means connecting said rectangular pipe portions to each other and to the inlet pipe, a tumbler-receiving tray slidably sustained by the vertical legs of said rectangular pipe portions, spraying devices secured to the upper horizontal sides of said rectangular pipe portions, and nozzles secured to the lower horizontal sides thereof.
