MOTT IRON VORKS, OF NEVlT YORK, N. Y.
NEEDLE OR SPRAY BATH.
.SPEIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,785, dated February 9, 18iE6.
Application filed August 17, 1885. Serial No. 174.542. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:v
Be it known that I, GEORGE TAYLOR, of J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Needle or Spray Baths;
and the following is declared to be a description of the same.
h lNeedle or spray baths have been used be- Vlore in connection with what are known as m Turkish and Russian baths, the special feature of said needle or spray'baths being to throw upon the person of the bather ne needlelike streams 0f hot, cold Vor tepid Water. Bat-hs of this kind are provided with i5 a shower7 overhead, liversprays to direct the water upon the sides of the bather, and a douche or fountain-spray to direct the water upward.
My invention relates to a needle or spray 2o bath' of this general character; and the same consists in the improvements hereinafter described, whereby simplicity in construction and efficiency in operation are attained.
In my improved needle or spray'bath the bather can be sprayed all over without the necessity of changing his position, and the cocks' Alor opening and. shutting the water supply pipes are made in such a manner that the cold -Water supply is always open and the l quantity passing into the mixing-column may never be tOo great; hence there is no risk of the person being scalded, and the hot and cold water are controlled so that the spray may 3 5 be etany desired temperature. A thermoineter is connected with the apparatus to indicate thetemperature of the water as it passes to any point of the apparatus, and there are valves to regulate the passage of the water to 4o different parts of the apparatus.
In the drawings, Figure lis an elevation of the apparatus complete, portions of the front tubes being removed. Fig. 2 is a plan below the line .fr x. lJ-Tig. 3 is avertical section of the rose and jet tube for the douche. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan of one rose and cock for the liver-sprays; and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan of the hot and cold water cocks; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the mixing-column, show- 5o ing the thermometer and bulb.
The appara-tus is to stand upon a suitable base, A, which may be in the form of a pau, to which a waste-pipe is connected, and there is an inclosing-case, B, of sheet metal or other material, to surround the apparatus on three sides, and ,there may be a cover, O, and a door may also be provided, if desired. l make use of four columns, E E F F, supported at the bottom by the base A, and connected at the top ends by Ts and bends with the pipes G, 6o
which form a top frame that opens into said columns, and connected with this top frame is? the supply-pipe H, havinga cock or valve, l, by which the force of the water is regulated. These columns E E rand F F are perforated with vertical ranges ol' fine holes, through which the water issues toward the person when standing centrally between the columns.
K is the pipe through which hot water is supplied, and Lis the pipe through which the 7o cold water is supplied. These pass to the respective cocks, M N, in any desired manner, and between these cocks M N and the supplypipe H is the four-way coupling P.
I make use of a thermometer at Q, the tube and scale of which are outside the mixing column H; but the bulb of the thermometer is within such mixing-column, so that said tlieri'noineter indicates the temperature of the water as the same is mixed in the column H. So This enables the party who is taking a bath to ascertain the temperature of the water and not to'use water that is too hot and liable to injure the person, or too cold and liable to produce a chill.
The cold-water valve N is to be made so that the cold water cannot be entirely shut oft'. This may be done by notching the edges ofthe valve; but in Fig. 5 I have shown a hole, i1, as passing through the partition of the valve, 9o hence the water can always pass through the said hole, and the volume can be increased by opening the valve. The hot-water valveM is to be of small dimensions, and it is preferable to ijnake use of a tapering base to the 95 valve, passing through the seat, as seen in Fig.
5, so that the supply of hot water will be opened very gradually, and a risk of scalding be avoided.
At the lower part of the mixingcolunin H ioo is a cock, It, and a pipe, R', that descends to the horizontal pipe R2 and rose R3 of the douche, and it is preferable to terminate the pipe R2 as a vertical jet-tube, R, around the outside of which the base of the rose R2 is screwed. This allows for the use of a jetdouche when the rose is removed.
From the lower part of the coupling P branch pipes S S pass off laterally, and they may be bent so as to pass around the outsides of the columns F F, or they may pass across through the columns, and the tubes S S terminate about midway between the columns E F with tapering plugs S and surrounding barrels S2, forming cocks, and the pipe and rose S3 upon each barrel S2 forms a handle, by which the barrel S2 can be turned to open the cock for the water to pass through the same,
` and the rose may be directed toward the person either horizontally or at an upward ory downward inclination, the Water being shut off when the rose is turned vertically up or down.
From the supply-pipe H, below the cock I, there is a branch pipe, U, extending up to the shower U. This pipe is also bent, so as to pass around the horizontal pipe G, or
through it, if desirable, and in this pipe at a convenient position is the cock U2. It is now to be understood that the cocks M N admit the supply of water to the whole ap` paratus, so that the temperature may be regulated by these cocks, and either hot,
lcold, or tepid water will be supplied, according to the amount which the respective cocks are opened, and these cocks do not require to be moved, except for changing the temperature. The cock I regulates the quantity of water passing through the pipe H, frame G, and perforated columns E E and F F, 'so that more or less water may be sprayed upon the person from the columns E E and F F. The cock R regulates the quantity of water discharged through the douche-rose R3 or jet R4. The cock U2 regulates quantity of water discharged by the shower, and the liver-spray roses S3 are self-acting to the extent that when turned into the position for use against the person the supply of Water is simultaneously turned on. My apparatus is therefore very cheap; but it is more efficient and reliable than the devices heretofore made.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, in a needle or spray bath,of the hot and cold water pipes K L, the coupling or branch pipe P, connecting the same, the hot and cold water cocks M N in the hot and cold water pipes, the mixing-column H above the coupling P, the cock I and supply-pipe H, the vertical perforated columns E E F F, and the pipes G, forming a top frame and connecting the columns to the supply-pipe H, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a needle and spray bath, of the hot and cold water pipes K L, the coupling or branch pipe P, connecting the same, the hot and cold water cocks M N in the hot and cold water pipes, the mixing-column H above the coupling P, and a-thermometer, Q, upon the surface of the column H', its stem passing through the column with the bulb inside, the cock I and supply -pipe H, the vertical perforated columns E E F F, and the pipes G, forming a top frame and connecting the columns to the supply-pipe H, substantially as specied.
3. The combination, in a needle-spray bath, of the hot and cold water pipes K L, the coupling or'branch pipe P,connecting the same, the hot and cold water cocks M N in the hot and cold water pipes, the mixing-column H above the coupling P, the cock I and supply-pipe H, the vertical perforated columns E E F F, the pipes G, forming a top frame and connecting the columns yto the supply-pipe H, and the lateral pipes S, connected to the coupling PY and extending out horizontally, the plugs S', and the movable barrels S2, and spray-roses S3, substantially as specified. 4. The combination,iu a neeedle-spray7 bath, of the hot and cold water pipes K L, the coupling or branch pipe P,connecting the same, the hot and cold water cocks M N in the hot and vcold water pipes, the mixing-column H above the coupling P, the cock I and supply-pipe H,
the Vertical perforated columns E E F F, the
pipes G, forming a top frame and connecting the columns to the supply-pipe H, and the cock R, descending pipe R', pipe R2, and.
