:JOSEPH G. PERKINS, OFCINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOB, T0 SOLOMON L. FRIEDMAN AND BENJAMIN FRIEDMAN, BOTH OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BATH-SHOWER.
Application filed June 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osnrrr G. PERKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Showers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shower apparatus for bath tubs.
One of its objects is to provide an improved shower to rest upon and preferably slightly within the rim of the tub to discharge the shower wholly within the tub, so as to require no curtain.
Another object is to provide for directing the shower to the desired locality in the tub.
Another object is to provide improved means for controlling the water supply so as to direct it wholly. or partly to the shower, or wholly into the tub direct.
Another object is to provide improved means to detachably connect the shower to any tub of usual type of construction.
My invention also comprises certain de tails of form combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure -1 is a top plan view of a tub with my improved shower in position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of a portion of the shower tube showing the location of the shower perforations. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the water supply cocks and shower coupling and controlling apparatus, and showing a modification. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on line X X of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on line Z Z of Fig. 4.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention in which- A represents the tub, B and B the hot and cold water cocks and C the common discharge or exit port to the tub.
The shower is preferably in the form of a loop shaped perforated tube D, the opposite ends of which are secured by tight joints to a coupling member E to be detacha-bly connected to the exit port C of any tub in connection with which the shower is to be used. The shower tube D is preferably seated slightly within the rim of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 36,359.
tub and rests against the face of the sides and inclined end of the tub thereby avoiding any of the water from the shower being thrown outside of the tub, and requiring no shower curtain. In order for the shower D to properly perform its function the perforations close to the coupling E should be so placed as to direct the shower almost straight downwardly, and along the sides the perforations should be placed so as to direct the shower progressively in a more horizontal direction from the foot of the tub toward the head, while at the head and along'the sides close to the head the perforations should direct the shower horizontally or slightly above a horizontal and allow the jets to describe arcs of circles and focus near the center of the head end of the tub at a point about in a horizontal plane with the shower tube. When so arranged the shower will be most serviceably directed upon a person in the tub, and by regulating the pressure of the jets may be further controlled to secure the desired result, and also to flush or clean the tub.
The coupling member E has a vertical bore 2 from which the shower tube receives its supply of water. A recess 3 at the upper end of the coupling member enables the coupling member to telescope over the exit port 0 and a gasket 4 of rubber or like material secures a tight joint between the exit port and coupling member. The lower end of the coupling member E is of larger diameter than the bore 2 and is closed and it is provided through its side walls with a series of ports 5 which are to discharge water directly into the tub, and are designed to provide a sufficient exit when fully open to entirely relieve back pressure of water in the shower tube and thus prevent any flow of water from the shower tube perforations while filling the tub through the ports 5. The ports 5 are opened and closed by means of a partially rotatable valve H which has a tubular section fitting closely over the lower cylindrical end of coupling member E with ports 6 to register with the ports 5 in one position and with intermediate sections 7 to close the ports 5 in another position. The valve H has also a hood 8 which serves as a convenient handleby means of which to adjust valve H, and also to direct the water issuing from ports 5' downwardly into'the tub. A stop pin 9 serves to limit the movement of'valve H, and a screw, 10 and washer llserve to hold it in place relative to coupling member E. The several ports 5 greatly exceed the cross sectional area of the bore 2, and thus are enabled to entirely relieve the shower tube from back pressure of water, which is also facilitated by the enlarged bore of coupling E below the tube D.
A metal yoke K has a thumb screw 12 threaded thereto and a shoe 14: at the end of said screw to seat and press upon the upper face of the exit port, while the lower barbed ends 15 of the yoke K engage recesses in the'coupling member E to detachably lock said shower attachment to the water supply exit port.
If desired two or more rose-head showers such as indicated at L Fig. 3 may be substituted for the continuous loop shaped shower tube.
The apparatus herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
l. A bath shower comprising in combination witha bath tub a shower member provided with inwardly directed jets, a tube leading to said shower member from the hot and cold Water supply of the tub, a coupling member connected to the water supply exit of the tub, said coupling member being provided with a valve controlled exit to the tub of greater dimensions than the hot and cold water exit port of the tub, to relieve said tube from water pressure and prevent a flow of water at the jets of said shower member when said coupling exit valve is open.
2. A bath shower comprising in combination with a bath tub ashower member located substantially at the rim of the tub and provided with inwardly directed jets, a coupling member connected to the hot and cold water exit of the tub and provided with a supply tube leading from the central portion of said-coupling to said shower member, a series of circumferential exit ports below said tube leading to the tub, a valve rotatably mounted upon said coupling and provided with ports and gates to open and close said coupling exit ports, and a hood to direigt the escaping water downwardly into the tu 3. A bath shower comprising in combination with a bath tub a shower member located substantially at the rim of the tub and provided with inwardly directed jets, a coupling member connected to the hot and cold water exit of the tub and provided with a supply tube leading from the central portion of said coupling member to said shower member, a series of circumferential exit ports in the lower cylindical portion of said coupling of greater combined area than the tub exit port, a tubular valve having gates and ports fitted over the lower cylindrical portion of said coupling to open and close said coupling exit ports, and a hood carried by said valve to direct the escaping water downwardly into the tub.
In testimony whereof 'I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
