G. DEMENT. MANICURE IMPLEMENT.
l lll/111,',
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GENEVIEVE DEMENT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MANICURE IMPLEMENT.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,076, dated December 29, 1891.
Application iled March 23,1891. Serial No. 386,025. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GENEVIEVE DEMENT, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manicure Implements, of which the following is a specilication'.-
The object of my invention is to provide an improved manicure implement adapted for burnishing the finger-nails, and which may be adapted to contain the materials, tools, and appliances of the usual manicure set. The body of this burnisher I construct by preference of metal in hollow conical form and cover'it or part of it with' some soft Inaterial, such as chamois-skin; and I also provide in said body a longitudinal concave depression and to the surface of which the burnishing material is also applied. This concave form adapts itself more readily to the shape of the nails when applied lengthwise thereof, which is the proper method of application, and I provide this hollow body with a handle, which is preferably also hollow and detachable and providing a single compartment or divided into a plurality of compartments to contain some of the smaller implements or materials of a manicure set,
while the larger implements may be placed within the hollow of the body, which may be also divided into a plurality of compartments.
The whole device may be inclosed by a suitable case or cover, is readilyportable, and can be packed in small space. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the burnisher, partly in section, inclosed by a case also in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view looking upon the concave portion of the burnisher. Figs. 3 and et are sectional views looking to the right of the lines 3 3 andii, respectively; and Figs. and5 t' show modified constructions of the body of the burnisher.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the burnisher, which may be made of metal or other workable material cast, bent, or molded in hollow tubular or conical form, and which has a part or all of its surface covered by a suitable burnishing material, such as cloth, felt or chamois-skin, or it may have powder, paste, dac., applied thereto.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the body A is formed of a pliable material bent around an interior tube B, having a flattened portion b therein, and a separate section C is employed having a bearing upon the depressed portion of the body B and covered by the chamois-skin a. A similar covering A is applied to the body A.
In Fig. 5 the part B is omitted and the portions A and C are integrally formed from a hollow1 cone, preferably from metal, and having an envelope or covering of soft skin or fabric. By preference this covering will be cemented or otherwise united to the surface of the depressed or concave portion of the burnisher, and when the nails are rubbed lengthwise of this depressed portion of the burnisher drawn lengthwise over the nails they conform readily to the shape of the burnisher, the friction being applied lengthwise of the nails or in the direction of their growth and grain, thus preventing their splitting or becoming brittle. The base of this body may be threaded, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and the handle B, having a threaded socket b', may be applied thereto. The interior of the body of the burnisher is thus adaptedto contain tools such as the scissors and le shown in Fig. l, and the body of the handle is also hollow and may be divided into a plurality of compartments by the partitions e f to contain other implements or materials. The end of the handle is preferably closed by a screw-plug D, and the burnisher may be inclosed by the case E. If desired, the small end of the body of the burnisher may also be inclosed by a screw. I prefer to make the body of substantially the form shown in Figs. 2 and 4; but it is obvious that, instead of being circular in its contour, it may be angular or oval in cross-section and uted, as shown in Fig. 6, and the depression may be of any desired length and width and occupy more or less of the surface of the body, as desired.
Without limiting my invention to the details of construction herein shown and de-4 scribed, I claim- A manicure implement having a long tapered body with a concave depression longitudinally formed in said body, a soft covering therefor, and a handle, the body and han; dle being hollow and provided with a removable closure and adapted to contain within them the manicure implements or materials, substantially as described.
GENEVIEVE DEMENT.
