UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR A. MOFFITT, OF MCCOMB, OHIO.
BOOK OR MUSIC HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,512, dated December 8, 1891. Application filed April 22, 1891. Serial No. 389,924. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. MOFFITT, of McComb, county of Hancock, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Book or Music Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a book or music holder, and has for its object to provide a light portable holder of neat appearance and inexpensive construction.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the parts and combination of parts.
hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric perspective view of a book held in opened position by my holder, the dotted lines show.- ing the page-presser and lever thrown, up to release the pages of the book. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder with the pagepresser thrown up.
1 designates the frame, comprising a single piece of wire having a cross-bar 2, with arms 3, projecting angularly therefrom and bent at 4 to form arms 5, which project at an inverse incline toward bar 2, and are coiled at 6 and bent to cause spring-arms 7 to incline transversely of the arms3 and 5, the extreme ends of the spring arms 7 being slightly curved, as at 8, to prevent the same from contacting with and abrading the book or music 9 when adjusting the holder in place.
10 designates a bar perforated at 11 to receive arms 3, which are passed through the same, whereby the bar is held upon the arms some distance from and in parallel relation with cross-bar 2 of the frame.
12 designates a spring-bar secured in bar 10 and projecting some distance above crossbar 2.
13 designates the page-presser lever, comprising a frame formed of a single piece of wire pivotally secured upon arm 2 by being coiled around the same, as at 14, and having a rear extension 15 hearing against springarm 12, for a purpose hereinafter stated. The front arms 16 of the page-presser lever extend forwardly at an incline and downwardly at an obtuse angle and are secured to the, page-presser 17, which comprises a bar arranged transversely of arms 3, and of a length to extend sufficiently across the book or music to hold the same opened, the presser-lever being preferably of 'a length to cause the page-presser to bear upon the pages upon the margin.
From the above description the operation will be apparent. In order to secure the holder in place, spring-arms 7 of frame 1 are sprung to separate the same from arms 3 and 5 a sufficient distance to allow of passing the back or cover between the same, when the presser-arm is forced down against the pressure exerted against extension 15 by springarms 12 until the page-presser bears against the pages to hold the same opened at the desired place. NVhen it is desired to turn a page, the reader raises the page-presser a su fficient distance, turns the page, and allows the presser to return to its position. It will be seen that the spring 12 exerts an influence to hold the presser down until the presser-lever has been raised to cause the rear extension to drop below the bar 2, when the action is reversed and the spring tends to elevate the same. It will be also seen that the device is simple, cheap, and light, and yet subserves the purpose of the more complicated and expensive holders.
That I claim is- In a book or music holder, a frame to rest upon the inner face of the cover, spring-arms to embrace the back, a spring-arm secured upon the frame, and a presser-arm pivotally secured upon the frame and hearing at one end upon the spring, the opposite end having a page-presser secured thereto.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 95 my own I affix my signature in presence of,
two witnesses.
