SPEGIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 464,473, da/ced December 1, 1891.
Application fi1ed Merck 20 1891. Serial N0. 385,719. (N0 mode1.)
clothing f01 seeuring the parts thereof to gether.
The invention consists 0f means provided for seeuring the hook detachably in engagement With the eye, but in such mahner that it Will not be detaehed therefrom except under considerable forceIand by direet eifort 01 extrinsic power applied theref0r.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view 0f my improved hook in conneetionwith an eye with which it is adapted to be used, both being shown in enlarged form. Fig. 2 is a side eleva.tion of my improved hook in connection with an eye, being tl1e same device shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view 0f a modified form 0f hook. Fig. 4 is a side elevatiou 0f the modified form 0f hook shown in Fig. 3.
The preferable form of my improved hook is constructed of a sing1e pieee of wire doubled upon itself and so bent and shaped as 130 form the hook shown in Figs. 1 am]. 2, complete and. integral.
'lhe hook consists of two loops A, a shank B, a eurved parc O, atongue D, and a springcatch E. The catch E, being rigid t0 the free end of the tongue D, extends therefrom 1:0- ward the curved partobliquely t0 the shank B, and is bent 01 curved therefrom toward the curved part extending obliquely to the tongue D, against which it bears ab its free end at a distance from the free end 0f the tongue D. This spring-cateh E is preferably e1astie 130 a sufficient extent 130 a1low the eye F 120 be placed in engagement With the hook, in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by pass ing the outer 01 curved body part of the eye 0ver the end of the tongue D, and inwardly between the springzatoh E and the shank B.
When thus in p1aee the eye will not be detached from the hook aceidentally or unintentionally, and 02m only be removed therefrom by foreing it between the catch E and the shank B With sufficient power to push the catch away fr01n the shank B and a1low the eye t0 pass between them.
As the spring-catch E is integral with ehe tongue D, being eontinuous from its free end, and as the catch ab its free end bea1s against the tongue, it will be undersood that the middl'e of the intermediate portion of the spring-ea-tch, Whieh is norma1ly near to 01 againstthe shank, 02m be pushed away fron1 the shank toward the tongue and in opposition to the support ab both ends of the catch only by such eonsidemble force as is not likely to be exerted 0n the 03/6011 accidentally, and the device is therefore a peculiarly reliab1e hook, not 1ikely to be disengaged frorn the eye except by force applied therefor When suehdisengagement is desired.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and am]. 4 the hook is formed 01: a strap 0f meta1 G, properly bent and shaped t0 forma the integral hook, ehe loops A being formed from the strap by splitting it longitudinally aud bending the furcate ends into round loops.
What I c1ain1 as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hook consisting 0f a shank, a curved part, a tongue substantially parallel With the shank, and a spring-cateh rigid 130 the tongue a1; its free end, which catch extends therefrom toward the curved pa1t obliquely across tending fron1 the free end 0f the tongue ob liquely to the shank and in reverse ob1ique In testimony Whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0f two witnesses.
