To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ORIN F. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley, in the county of Stevens and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved form of buckle and has, as its principal object, the production of a buckle which may be attached to a strap without the aid of rivets.

A further object resides in the particular arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawingz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the belt or strap applied to the buckle.

In the separate views the same part is designated by the same reference character.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates my improved buckle which is preferably cast integral with the exception of the hook or prong, and comprises a rectangular frame having two parallel side pieces such as 2 connected at the ends by members 3, it being understood that the parts 2 and 3 lie in approximately the same plane. About midway of the length of the parts 2 is a cross plate 4 lying substantially in the plane of the frame to which the prong or hook 5 is pivoted near one edge. It will be obvious that the prong 5 rests on one of the members 3 at one end of the frame. For purposes of convenience I will call this end of the frame the forward end and the side of the frame on which the prong rests I will call the top. At the rear of the frame 1 and projecting upwardly from the top thereof I provide a bow-shaped piece 6 there being suflicient space between the member 6 and the member 3 at that end of the frame to permit a strap to pass freely therethrough. A bow shaped member 7, similar to 6, is provided which stretches between the members 2 on the underside of the frame at the forward edge of the plate 4.

under face of the frame as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It will also be seen that the under face of the plate 4 carries a pin 10 projecting downwardly therefrom, the purpose of which will presently appear.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 3, 11 is the end of the strap which is intended to be fixed to the buckle 1 and the end 11 is led between the member 6 and the rear member 3, thence forwardly under the forward member 3, after which it is bent rearwardly and passed through the member 7 above the cross bar 8 and below the rear member 3, the end appearing at 12. It will be understood that the end of the strap 11 is provided with suitable holes through which the prong 5 and the pin 10 may project. After the strap has been woven into the position shown in Fig. 3, the part 11 is pulled rearwardly so that the strap is tightened over the forward end of the plate 4 allowing prong 5 to project in the usual manner so that it may be used for attaching the strap 11 to some other strap or to the free end of the same strap. When the strap 11 is drawn rearwardly in the manner just mentioned, it is pulled firmly against the pin 10 so that the strap and buckle cannot become disengaged. It will be obvious moreover, from an inspection of Fig. 3, that the end 12 being doubled under the part 11 above the bar edge, the end 12 is held firmly in place and there is no liability of its becoming disengaged from the pin 10. It will be apparent however, that the buckle may be readily removed when it is desired to do so.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that I provide a buckle which is both convenient and durable and which may be attached to said strap without the use of rivets or similar devices.
