UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. HILL AND ELIJAH R. HILL, OF NEW ALBANY, MISSISSIPPI.
BELL-CYOLLARFOR CATTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 384,037, dated June 5, 1888.
Serial No. 266,894. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JOHN BoBERTsoN HILL and ELIJAH ROBERTSON HILL, both of New Albany, in the county of Union and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Bell-Collar for Cattle, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figurel is a frontelevation of our improved bell-collar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the yoke and clasp. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastener, and Fig. 4 is a partial side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient collar for carrying cattlebells.
Our invention consists in the combination, with a yoke formed of bent wood and provided with flat staples, of aclasp adapted to receive the ends of the yoke and the staples, and fastening-tongues of leather for insertion in the staples for holding the yoke in the clasp, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The yoke A is formed of a strip of bent wood, and is providednear its extremities with flat staples a, projecting from the outer sides of the yoke. The inner surface, I), of the curved part of the yoke is rounded,to cause it to fit easily upon the neck of the animal. To the lower end of the yoke is fitted a clasp, B, formed of a metal plate bent twice at an angle of about sixty degrees in the same direction, and adapted to receive the ends of the yoke.
In the arms of the clasp B are formed rectangular perforations c, for receiving the staples a, and the extremities of, the said arms are bent over, forming fasteners c,f0r the tongue 0, inserted in the staples a. The tongues C are formed of a strip of leather with a T-shaped head, d, and when in place the said T-shaped heads slip underneath the curved extremities of the arms of the clasp, and are thus pre- Vented from becoming accidentally withdrawn from the staples a.
The part of the clasp between the arms is provided with a leather covering, 6, for receiving the wear of the staple f 0f the bell. (Shown in dotted lines in Figs. land 4.) The bell-collar is worn in the same manner as the ordinary leather strap employed for the same purpose; but being of unyielding character, it is worn by the animal with more comfort.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combinatiomin a bell -collar, of the yoke A, provided with staples a, the clasp B, having apertures c, for receiving the staples a, and the leather tongues (3, provided with heads d and adapted to enter the staples a, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a bell-collar for cattle, formed of a wooden yoke, A, provided with staples a, the clasp B, furnished with apertures c, for receiving the staples a, and providedwith curved ends 0, the leather lining e, secured to the clasp B, and the tongue (3, provided with T-heads d, substantially as described.
