SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,409, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed February 3, 1891. Serial No. 380,050. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. WILLIAMS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bins; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to produce a bin or receptacle to hold articles or material of any kind, and which is so shaped as to have practically but two corners, so that anything placed therein can be readily removed therefrom, and to so construct thelid or cover-that it can be partially opened to give access to the front of the bin only, and after the two parts of the lid have been. closed together to give access to the whole interior by raising both covers at once.

Figure 1 represents a perspective of a bin which embodies my invention, the covers be-' ing shown closed in solid lines and raised in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

A represents a bin, box, or receptacle that is designed to hold any article for household use or merchandise for sale, and which is made about triangular in cross-section. The top and rear sides are made perfectly straight, while the bottom and front side are inclined forward and upward, as shown, so that the only two corners in the bin are at its bottom.

This bin is intended either for use in the household, store, or any other place, and its shape is especially adapted for allowing any article that is placed therein to be readily and quickly removed from it.

The rear lower edge of the bin rests directly upon the floor or earth, while its front edge is supported by suitable legs 0, which may be either attached to the ends of the bin or to its front edge as may be preferred.

Either hinged or pivoted in any suitable manner to the rear edge or corners of the bin is a lid D, which is only wide enough to exbin,slightly below its top edge, are the supporting-cleats G, upon which a second sliding lid I is placed, which lid I is about or nearly as Wide as the hinged one. The hinged or pivoted lid resting upon the upper edges of the bin allows the sliding lid to move freely back and forth under it, so that the slidinglid can be pushed back at anytime to give access to the front of the bin without having to raise the rear lid. Should it not be desired to use cleats to support the sliding lid, the top edges of the bin, if made of sheet metal, may be turned over so as to form guides for the sliding lid. In order to prevent the sliding lid from moving outward beyond the front edge of the bin a suitable stop or stops are formed, and these stops may either be attached to the bin or formed upon the under side of thelid itself. The manneroflimiting the outward movement of the sliding lid is immaterial, for this may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Very frequently the bin will be placed in positions where it will be very inconvenient to raise a lid which is as wide as the bin itself, and a lid which is made wide enough to cover the bin would in many cases be heavy and cumbersome to operate. made in two parts, as here shown, the sliding lid can be moved back under the hinged one; but when it is necessary to expose the entire top of the bin it is desirable that both lids should be raised at the same time. For this purpose to the under side of the hinged lid there are secured two hooks or catches J, of any suitable construction, which catch under and over the rear edge of the sliding lid, so that when the sliding lid is forced back its rear edges are caught by these catches so as to connect the two lids together as if they formed but one. To the front edge of the sliding lid is also secured a catch 0, of any suitable construction, which catches over the front edge of the hinged lid, and hence when the sliding lid is forced back the two lids are fastened together loosely, so as to move as if but a single part. When the hinged lid is raised, the sliding lid is raised with it, and the two parts together extend upward only about one- If the lid is half the distance of the lid, which is wide enough to cover the whole top of the bin. The two lids together are easier raised, require less exertion to open and close, and the bin can be placed in positions where it will not be possible to place it where a single wide cover is used. Hooks are here shown for connecting the two parts of the lid when one is slid over the other; but I do not restrict my invention to this particular form of fastening, for. any other form which is preferred and Which will answer the same purpose may be used.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a bin, a casing, a cover consisting of an inner portion hinged at its inner edge to the inner upper edge of the casing, a sliding portion at the front of the bin, one portion being above the other, suitable slideways for the sliding portion, and devices connected to the ends of the said portions for connecting them, together when the sliding portion is pushed inward, the parts combined substantially as shown and described.

2. A bin or box provided with a hinged or pivoted cover which extends over onlya po1= tion of its top, and which is provided with catches or hooks upon one end, combined with a sliding cover also provided with a catch or hook, and which also extends over only a portion of the top of-the bin, the two lids being adapted to be raised together, substantially as specified.

3. In a bin, a casing, a cover consisting of an inner portion hinged at its inner edge to the upper inner edge of the bin, guideways below the'said hinged portion, a sliding por-
