E. K. HEAPS.
GUPP HOLDER.
No. 463,369. Patented Nov. 17, 1891.
, I E l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD lKNOVVLES HEAPS, OF SI-IEFFIELD, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT OUFF ADJUSTER COMPANY, LIMITED, OF SAME PLACE. A
CUFF-HKOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,369, dated November 1'7, 189] n Application lled August l5, 1890. Serial N0.362,113. (No model.)
.T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD KNoWLEs HEAPS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Sheffield, countyof York, England7 have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Cuff-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.v v
This invention consists in improved detachable appliances adapted to be quickly and securely attached within the sleeves of a coat, so as to be readily transferred from one coat to another, for so attaching the shirtcuffs that they shall be removable with the coat and that they may be raised or lowered at Will.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, like letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure l represents three external views, A being an edge view, B a plan orface View, and C a back view. Fig. 2 represents a sectional edge view.
In carrying out the invention I takea short strip or flat bar of thin spring-steel or other elastic material suitable for the purpose-say, for example, four inches long and a quarter of an inch wide, or thereabout-and I terminate each end of the bar in a short double prong or fork H, preferably bending each prong slightly backward. To this bar I iit a short sliding clip I, having a stud J or equivalent device for attaching the cuff thereto. Africtional brake-spring K (seen in Fig-` 2) is placed within the sliding clip in contact with the bar to retain the clip and cuff at any point to which they maybe lnoved. A p0rtion of the clip itself may instead be madeto act as such retainer or brake-spring. 4o
A holder is attached within a coat-sleeve by pressing one of the forked ends into the lining of the sleeve and then slightly arching the elastic bar and inserting the opposite prongs of the bar and releasing it. The pair of holders may consequently be quickly and easily attached or transferred from one coat to another without needle and thread, pins, l screws, or the like, which distinguishes my improved appliances from other cuff-holders 5o most nearly resembling them.
Having thus described my said appliances, what' I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved cuff-holder composed of an elastic flat bar provided at its ends with sharp prongs H, adapted to be sprung into the 1ining of a coat-sleeve, and a sliding clip I, movable upon said bar and provided with a device .I for attaching the cuff thereto, substan- 6o tially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affixed lhereto my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of April, 1890.
EDWARD i KNOVVLES HEAPS.'
