UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. IVALKER, OF DUNNIGAN, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,347, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed August 15,1891. Serial No. 402,744. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunnigan, in the county of Polk and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to an improvement in box-fasteners; and it consists in the certain peculiar features of construction and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to providea fastening for boxes, crates, and other similar articles, which will be simple in its construction, cheaply manufactured, and quickly applied and adjusted. This object I accomplish by the construction illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicatelikeparts in the several views, and in which I Figure 1 is an end elevation, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
In the drawings, A represents a box having a cover B, provided with cleats l) on its ends overhanging the sides of the box. Through these cleats and the end portions of the cover are extended metal rods 0, their ends passing through the cleats and cover and formed into eyes 0, the upper portions of the rods extending'entirely across the ends of the cover on the upper face, as at c, at which points they are secured in place by staples 0 D represents a bail having diverging sides terminating in a rounded bearing or afiex, and having its upper end hooked through and secured to the eyes 0 of the rods 0 on the cover- Pivotally secured on the ends of the box, near the lower portions thereof, are camsE, having a grooved periphery and a lever-arm e. These cams occupy a position between the sides of the bail, which is arranged to fit over the grooved end thereof.
F is a spring-catch secured to the end of the box, arranged with its inclined side in the path of the lever, so that as the lever is forced around it rises up on the inclined face of the spring, dropping off from the end thereof, and is thus prevented from being moved backward.
In operation the cover is placed on the box and the bail swung down over the cams, the latter being turned to throw the lever-handle in the rear of the spring. The leveris then forced forward, turning the cam and tightly pressing the same against the bail resting in the groove thereof. A backward or forward movement of the lever is prevented by the spring and the side bar of the bail, between which it rests when the box is fastened. By extending'the rod across the top of thebox I add additional strength to the cover and also more equally distribute the strain.
It is to be understood that the above construction is to be applied to both ends of the box.
I am aware that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and printhe ends of a box, of a cover having overlap-' ping ends, a rod passing through the overlapping ends of the cover across the top thereof,
eyes formed in the ends of the rod, a bail having. its ends secured in the eyes and extending down to a point near. the bottom of the box, a cam on the end of the box, having a grooved periphery with which the bail engages, a lever on the cam between the sides of the bail, and a spring-catch with which the lever comes in contact, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. IVALKER.
