SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,42 5, dated January 8, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HERMAN PFUND, residing at Madison, and AUGUST 0. J AOOBI, residing at Middleton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin DevicesforHandling Books; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical device for the use of librarians and others as an aid in the taking down and replacing of high shelf books; and it'consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of our device partly in section on line 1-1 of the succeeding figure; Fig. 2, a plan view of the head portion of the device; Fig. 3, a sectional view on line 33 of the first figure, and Fig. 4, a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of said first figure.

Referring by letter to the drawings A represents the handle of our device the same being a pole or bar of any suitable length and material, the latter being preferably wood. The front of the handle is recessed at the upper portion to obtain clearance for certain working parts hereinafter set forth, and rigidly secured to the flattened upper end b of said handle is a plate B of metal or other suitable material provided with diagonal slots 0, the lower end of this plate being reduced as to width and provided with ears (1 that extend toward the rear and are rigidly secured to the aforesaid handle by screws or other suitable means.

As herein shownwe prefer to make theears d of the plate B long enough to compel said plate to stand at an angle to the handle A, whereby we facilitate the operation of our device. At right angles to the front of the plate and preferably in one piece therewith is a flange e of suitable width, and rigidly secured to the lower end-of said plate is'a foot-piece f that also extends in a forward direction. While we have shown a right angle foot-piece made separate and attached to the plate, it

herein shown these lugs may be rivets connecting the slide with a stay-bar D loose against the back of the aforesaid plate. The upper end of a link E is in loose engagement with the uppermost lug g of the jaw O, and if the bar D be employed we prefer to have its upper end bent over and engaged with said lug against the back of the link, as herein shown.

The lower end of the link E is in loose engagement with the upper end of a rod Fthat occupies a longitudinal groove in the front of the handle A, staples i or other suitable means being employed to prevent said rod from springing out of place.

The lower end of the rod Fis provided with a finger grip j, and pivoted to this finger-grip is a dog is impinged against a spring m also attached to said finger-grip and having sufficient power to hold the dog in normal position away from a rack G secured within the deepened lower portion of the longitudinal handlegroove above specified. We also prefer to provide the rod F with an eye 19 or other suitable projection intermediate of its ends, this projection being for the grasp of the operator in that hand not employed in connection with the finger-grip hereinbefore set forth.

The flanged and foot-pieced plate B and the jaw 0 above specified constitute a clamp, and in practice the movable jaw-portion of this clamp is adjusted by the rod F in link-connection therewith to fit the book it is desirable to handle. The book being engaged, the movable jawO of the clamp is brought as tight as possible against said book bya draw on the rod F, after which the dog'lc is operated against the rack G to thereby exert considerable leverage on said rod, the result being that all the slack in said clamp is taken up and the aforesaid book tightly gripped so that it may be readily lifted from one elevation to another, the depression of said dog alsoacting to lock the aforesaid clamp.

To unlock the clamp, the rod F is simply pushed forward and this operation may be offected by a grasp of the operator on the finger-grip j or the projection 19 farther up said rod.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device for handling books, the same comprising a handle of any suitable length, a flanged plate rigidly secured to the handle and provided with diagonal slots, a jaw having lugs loose in the plate-slots, a sliding rod on said handle, and a link connecting the rod with one of the jaw-lugs,substantially as set forth.

2. A device for handling books, the same comprising a handle of any suitable length, a diagonally slotted and flanged plate rigidly secured to the handle, a foot-piece on the plate, a jaw having lugs loose in the plateslots, a sliding rod on said handle, and a link conmeeting the rod with one of the jaw-lugs, substantially as set forth.

3. A device for handling books, the same comprising a handle of any suitable length, a diagonally slotted and flanged plate rigidly secured to the handle, a jaw havinglugs loose in the plate-slots, a sliding rod on said handle in link-connection with one of the jaw-lugs, a rack on the aforesaid handle, and a dog in pivotal connection with the rod for engage ment with the rack, substantially as set forth.

4. A device for handling books, the same comprising a handle of any suitable length, a diagonally slotted and flanged plate rigidly secured to the handle, a jaw having lugs loose in the plate-slots, a sliding rod in link-connection with one of the jaw-lugs and provided with afinger-grip, a rack on the aforesaid handle, and a spring-controlled dog pivoted to the fin ger-gri p for engagement with the rack, substantially as set forth.

5. A device for handling books, the same comprising a handle of any suitable length, a diagonally slotted and flanged plate fast to the handle, a foot-piece on the plate, a jaw having lugs loose in the plate-slots, a staybar fast on the lugs, a link loose on one of said lugs under a bent down end of the bar also engaged with this lug, a sliding rod on said handle-bar in engagement with the link, a spring-controlled dog pivotally connected to .the rod, and a rack on the aforesaid handle adjacent to the dog, substantially as set forth.
