PATENT Fries,
LAURENCE A. ROOKELEIN, OF PORT J ERVIS, NEWV YORK.
STOVE-LID LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,314, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed May 9, 1904. Serial No 207,116.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAURENCE A. ROCKE- LEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Jervis, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stove-lid lifters.
The object of the invention is to provide a lifter for stove-lids whereby said lids may be firmly engaged and lifted without danger of the same slipping or dropping off the lifter.
A further object is to provide a lifter of this character which will be simple in construction, strong and durable, inexpensive, and well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a stove-lid, showing the application of the lifter to the same. Fig. 2 is a side view of the lower portion of the lifter, showing the position of the parts when not engaged with a stove-lid; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the lifter, taken just above the pivoted member of the same.
Referring more. particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the lifter, consisting of a handle portion 2, on one end of which is secured a coiled-wire handle 3, the size of the wire coils gradually increasing from the opposite ends of said handle toward the center of the same, thereby giving to said handle a convenient shape. The lower portion of the handle is curved downwardly, as shown atft, and slightly enlarged at its lower end, as shown at 5, said enlarged end being provided with a centrallydispos'ed vertical slot 6 and with integral forwardly-projecting curved fingers 7. In the slot 6 is pivotally mounted a holding'device consisting of a flat bar or plate 8, arranged in the slot 6 and pivotally mounted on a pin or bolt 9, which passes through the same and the slotted end of the lifter. On the outer or forward end of the plate or bar 8 is integrally formed a pair of forwardly-projecting downwardly-curved holding-fingers 10. On the inner or rear end of the plate or bar 8 is formed a crossbar 12, the ends of which project laterally from said bar 8 and are provided with rearwardly-projecting lugs 13. The bar 12 and lugs 13 on the rear end of the bar 8 being heavier than the fingers 10 at the forward end of the same will overbalance said forward end and norm ally hold said lingers 10 above and out of engagement with the fingers 7 thereby permitting said fingers 7 to be engaged with the ears or lugs in the recess of the stove-lid. WVhen the fingers 7 are engaged in the recess of the stove-lid, the lugs 13 on the bar 12 at the inner or rear end of the holding device will engage the top of said lid, and thereby force the fingers 10 on the opposite end of the same into engagement with the fingers 7, thereby preventing the same from becoming disengaged from the lugs or ears of the lid while supporting the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lifter for stove-lids, consisting of a, handle portion having at one end curved bifur-- cated lid-engaging lingers, a holding device arranged in the lower end of said handle, said holding device consisting of a plate or bar pivotally mounted between said lingers, holding-fingers formed on the forward end of said plate or bar to coact with the lingers on said handle, and means whereby said holding device is actuated to bring said holding-fingers thereby disengaging the same from the fingers on said handle, and lugs formed on said crossbar to engage the stove-lid when supported by said lifter and thereby close said holdingfingers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of'two subscribing witnesses.
LAURENCE A. ROCKELEIN.
