Patented Feb. 17,1891.
Parenti linien,
VILLIAM. E. BLODGETI, OF F ARIBAULT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ISAAC A. BARNES, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,515, dated February 17, 1891.
Application tiled July 25,'1890. Serial No. 359,884. (No model.)
To all wiz/0m, it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM E. BLODGETT, of Faribanlhin the count-y of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a speeiiication.
My invention relates to simple adjustable means for holding boxes or cans or for screw ing on or off the covers of same.
Myinvention consists in a 'notched bar provided with a forked portion, the ends of which form inwardly-turned hooks adapted to engage the outer edges of the object to be held. A suitable toggle-locking device is provided upon the notched bar adapted to engage with the bar and the inner edge of said object, whereby the same is locked in position on said bar.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the aceompan ying drawings,in whichi Figure 1 is a side view of a holder and wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the saine. Fig. is a detail view of a slightly-different form of togglelocking device from that shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
My holder and wrench consists in the ratchet o1' notched bar 2, secured in the han- ,dle 3 and provided with the forked outer portion, as shown. This forked end consists of two armst and 5, having the sharppointed ends 6 and 7 in the form of inwardly-turned hooks. The sliding block 3 is adapted to be moved back and forth upon the bar 2, but cannot turn radially thereon. The opening El in this block is preferably made in the form shown, with the sharp corners 9 adapted to readily engage the notches of the bar when the upper end 10 of the block is pushed inwardly toward the handle. The bent S- shaped wire 11 is pivoted at its middle in the upper end 10 of the block 8 and is provided or formed with the sharppointed S-spring portion formed on each side of the middle of the Wire 11.
If it is desired to hold a blacking-box in. the holder, the box let is placed upon the bar and against the hooked points 6 and 7. The
box is then held in the position shown by dotted lines and the sharp points of the S- shaped portions 12 and. 13 placed against the lower part of the box, the bottom thereof resting upon the first turns of the said openingwvires. The block 8 is now forced in as far as possible and the box pressed down, thereby forein g it down against' the tension the block to lock the same against the notch in the bar 2. down, the points of the wire 11 are dropped below the dead-center line lying between the pi vot-point and the hooked points, thns locking the box against the bar 2 by the tension of the spring portions or wires 12 and 13, which constantly tends to press the box down. By lifting up on the inner end of the box the toggle-locking device may be loosened, the force of the springs being thus overcome and the box freed.
The form of locking device shown in Fig. 3 may be used upon a round or a square rod and is provided with hooked points similar to ti and 7. A number of holes or notches l5 are provided in the bar lli and are adapted to engage with the lower end of the link 17, pivoted upon the thumb-lever 18, as shown. This lever 1S is pivoted in turn to the sliding block 19, provided with the spur 20, adapted to be pressed against the object placed between the same and the hooked points upon the outer end of the bar by pressing down the thumb-lever of the toggle device, whereby the knuckle-joint formed by the link 17 and lever 18 is straightened out and the block 19 locked against the object.
I'Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the notched bar i with the forked ends 4 and 5, provided with the hooked ends 7 and (i, the block 10, the bent wire 1l, having the spring portions 12 and 13, pivoted on said block, and the handle 3, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the bar provided with the hooked ends, of the oppositely-located toggle-locking device arranged to engage notches in said bar and the object to be held, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of July, 1390.
WILLIAM E. BLODGETT.
In presence of- W; S. MORSE,
GEORGE PEARE.
