Description
Patented Nov. 23, 1948 UNITED f STATES PATENT OFFICE 4SPANNER WRENCH WITH MEANS To GRIP Y THE INNER SURFACE oF PULLEY RIMS Jerry J. Sullivan, Huntington Park, Calif.
Application May 31, 1946, Serial No. 673,308
Claims. 1 j
This inve-ntion relates to a spanner Wrench which is particularly adapted for adjusting the valves of injectors of a Diesel engine, but may be used as a general purpose wrench.
One object of the invention is to provide a spanner wrench, so formed that it may be applied to a pulley wheel or the like and then caused to have binding grip with the inner sur.- face of the rim of the wheeland turn the wheel when transverse swinging movement-,is imparted to the wrench. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a body formed with a head and a shank extending therefrom and carrying a handle which is pivotally mounted `and disposed along a handle at the rear end of the shank, the head having depending lugs or teeth spaced from each other and the `pivoted handle being connected with abar or strip extending longitudinally of the shank, so that when the handles are grasped and the pivoted handle swung towards the rigid handle, a tooth or finger at the front end of the strip will shift into engagement with the rim of the pulley and together with the teeth of the head iirmly grip the pulley and turn the pulley.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench wherein grip upon the pivoted handle which is naturally increased by strain exerted to turn the pulley will cause the teeth toA be brought into iirrner biting engagement withthe rim of the pulley and thus prevent the teeth from slipping and moving about the pulley 'circumferentially thereof instead of `turning `the pulley.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench consisting `.of a few number of parts which are of simple construction and" quite strong.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is atop view of the improved wrench;
Figure 2 is a View showing the Wrench partially in longitudinal section and partially in side elevation;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view of the body portion of the wrench, and
Figure 6 is a side view of the bar or strip actuated by the pivoted handle ofthe wrench. f
This `Spanner Wrench hase :body or main section I formed of steel or other strong metal and Alopening (i of the head 2.
shapedl to provide a head 2, from which extends a shank 3 terminating in a rigid handle 4 having opposite faces formed with recesses 5. Through the head 2 is formed an opening 6 which flares towards its opposite ends and in `front of this opening the head has its outer face formed with a recess 1 of triangular outline.
Lugs 8 extend downwardly from the head at opposite sides .of the recess I and these lugs extend radially of the opening 6 and gradually in,- crease in depth towards their outer ends which are beveled or tapered from opposite sides `to form sharp ends yfor the lugs. The Vlugs constitute teeth for the head 2 and when the Wrench is applied to a pulley wheel 9 with its outer or front end resti-ng upon the rim I0 thereof, the sharp outer ends of the lugs or teeth will bear against the inner surface of the rim in spaced relation to each other circumferentially `of the pulley.
An opening II is formed midway the width of the body `I, at approximately the junction of the head 2 with the shank 3 and through this opening passes a tooth or finger I2 formed by bending the front end cf a metal bar or strip I3 which extends longitudinally of the shank and is seatedin a recess I 4 formed in the outer side face `of the shank. An arcuateslot I5 is formed longitudinally of the shank adjacent the rear endof the recess I4 and through this `slot passes a. pin I6 which also passes through an opening II formed throughthe rear end portion of the strip or bar I3.
The pin I6 also extends through the Aopenings I8 which areformedin theenlargedforward end portions I9 of the side walls `20 of a movable handle 2l. This handle is U-shaped in cross section and straddles the shank of the handle 4, a `pin 22 being passed through openings 23forined in the handle 2| and through an opening 22 formed in the shank 3 to pivotally mount the handle 2I and permit it to have swinging movement towards and awayfromA the rigid handle 4. When Athepivoted handle is swung away from `the-rigid handle, the bar I3 will be shifted forwardly and the teeth `t and ringer I2 may `be iitted into the `side' recess of `the pulley wheel l9 with the shaft `25 passing Vthrough the center The `two handles will .then .be graspedand pressure applied to swing .the `handle 2l towardshandle 4 and the bar I3 will be .drawn rearwardly and its ,nnger brought into `engagement with the inner surface of the flange of the pulley. This will `cause the sharp `cned outer 'ends :off-the teeth 48 to bite into .the
flange of the pulley and firmly grip it so that when the wrench is swung circumferentially of the shaft, the pulley and the shaft will be turned.
When force is exerted to turn the pulley, the gripping pressure upon the handles is increased and this will increase grip of the teeth upon the pulley. Therefore, the teeth will not slip circumferentially of the pulley and allow the wrench to be moved without turning the pulley. After the pulley has been turned as much as desired it is merely necessary to release grip upon the handles and the wrench may be readily removed from the pulley.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a spanner wrench that will at all times be positive and eflicient in its operation and further can be manufactured at a very low cost.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
