UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY o. IIATCIIER, or MILTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
DEVICE FOR MAKING PLUG-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,151, dated November 1'7, 1891. Application filed June 9, I891. $e1'ia1No.395,6'78- (No model.)
.the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plug-making device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the parts assembled for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the base carrying the plunger-s. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing several of the forms arranged one upon the other.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In constructing the base I employ a pair of opposite longitudinal parallel side bars 1, to which side bars I secure at intervals transverse metal strips 2, securely bolted in position. The side bars terminate in handles 3, whereby the base may be readily handled.
4 designates the dies or plungers, which are of rectangular shape in-cross-section and are provided upon their upper faces, near their ends, with transverse recesses 5, agreeing in thickness with that of the transverse metal strips, which latter they receive. Upon the upper sides of the blocks are located metal facing-plates '7, through which the strips and the blocks are passed rivets 8. Similar plates 9 are also secured by said rivets to the under sides of the blocks. The blocks are arranged such distances apart as to leave intervening spaces 10.
11 designates the partition-box frame, the same being composed of opposite longitudinal side bars 12, connected at their ends by transverse end bars 13 and at their centers by a transverse bar 14, the latter being intersected at intervals by a series of longitudinal bars 15, which connect and are let into the inner sides or faces of the transverse end bars. By means of the bars described-it will be seen that I provide a series of pockets or compartments, which pockets or compartments are of exactly the size in plan of the dies or plungers and therefore adapted to receive and form a close joint with the sides of the same. The frame, it will be understood, is formed entirely of metal, and the transverse and 1011- gitudinal partition-bars ltand 15 are-1e.
ceived by the intervening spaces of the plungers or dies, said plungers projecting up into the compartments the thickness of their metal faces or plates, in which position the frame will rest upon the transverse metal strips 2.
In operation a series of forms are employed, and said operation may be briefly stated. as follows: The first form is mounted upon a suitable base and the partition-box frame mounted upon the form, so that the dies of the form extend into the compartments or boxes of the frame. Each compartment or box now receives its proper quantity of soft tobacco designed to be pressed into plugs, after which the second form is mounted upon the first frame and the under sides of the dies of the second form project into the upper sides of the first frame. The second frame is now mounted upon the second form, its compartments, and the third form mounted thereon, and so on indefinitely. These series of forms and frames are now subjected to pressure and the plugs thus pressed. \Vhen the forms and frames are separated, it will be seen that the plugs are free from spews or spread edges, and that their edges are smooth at their upper and lower sides.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- In a plug-making device, the combination, with the opposite side bars, the series of transverse metal strips, and the series of blocks having their upper faces recessed to receive the strips and provided at opposite sides with metal plates, of the frame com- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as prising the opposite longitudinal sidebars, my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the end and central connecting-bars, and the presence of two Witnesses.
