CHALK-LINE HOLDER AND PLUMiVlET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,757, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed February 4, 1891. Serial No. 380,222. (No model.\
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known th at I, RoBERr CHAPMAN HUX- TABLE, of Dartmouth, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Chalk Line Holder and Plummet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is for an improvement in chalk-line holders and plummets; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple device for carrying chalk and for chalking a line, and which, also, may be conveniently used as a plummet.
A further object of my invention is to produce a device which will not waste the chalk and which may be easily carried in the pocket Without spilling the chalk or soiling the clothmg.
To this end my invention consists in a.
chalk-line holder and plummet constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. 7
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
The body'A of the device is made of rubber or other flexible material, is enlarged at the center, and reduced near opposite ends, as shown at a, thus shaping it to the hand and adapting it to hold the. necessary quantity of chalk, and is provided with a slit a in one side, which may be opened wide enough to insert pieces of chalk, and after the chalk is inserted the slit will be closed, owing to the flexible nature of the material composing the device, so that the chalk will not escape. The body of the holder is provided with a spiral groove a which enables the chalk-line to be wound snugly thereon, and the line is thus reduced to asmaller compass, and is prevented from becoming tangled.
The body of the device is perforated at opposite ends, and in one end-is a metallic eyelet B, through which the chalk-line C is passed, and in the opposite end is a perforated weight B, which is preferably made of lead and which is made large enough to give the necessary weight to the device, so that it will answer the purpose of a plummet.
The chalk-line C is passed through the eyelet and through the perforated weight, extending longitudinally through the body of the device, and the ends of the line are knotted, as shown at 0, so that they may not be-. come detached. The eyelet B and weight B may be easily inserted in the ends of the device, owing to the flexible nature of the material, and the eyelet and weight are each provided with an annular recess 19, in which the material of the device fits, thus preventing them from being removed.
When the holder is not in use, the chalkline C is wound upon the body thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is to be used the line is of course unwound. If the line is -to be used as a chalk-line, it is drawn through the device, so that it will be properly chalked,
and it is then used in the ordinary way, and
if the device is to be used as a plummet the body is forced to one end of the line, and the device is dropped perpendicularly in the usual manner.
The chalk which is used in the holder is broken into lumps, so that it may be easily inserted through the slit a.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chalk-line holder and plummet comprising a flexible body having a slit in one side and openings at each end, an eyelet secured in one end and a perforated weight in the other end of the body, and a line extending longitudinally through the body and through the eyelet and weight, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a chalk-line holder and plummet comprising a flexible body portion having a spiral groove thereon, a slit in one side and perforated ends, an eyelet secured in one end of the body, a perforated weight secured in the opposite end, and a line extending through the body and through the eyelet and Weight, substantially as described.
ROBERT CHAPMAN HUXTABLE.
